As soon as Tiger is released, I'm buying a Mac mini and using it to learn Tiger Server. Will then use a PowerMac for everyday server work.

I got a mac mini the other day and it kicks a$$.

Give it enough ram and it can do anything, almost.

PS: I got mine at the Apple Store and it came with the 5400 rpm drive.

If the iMac range comes out with nice specs in the next upgrade, I'd consider it. If not, a mini for home, keeping my PB17 for on-the-go.

I'm probably going to build my next computer again now that I have a powerbook. It's so much better than buying a Dell or (God forbid) an HP/Compaq. You get exactly what you want, save money, learn alot, and have fun. Makes sense to me...

12" Powerbook G5 with backlit keyboard, 2GB RAM and 160GB disk. Who cares about optical drives, they're old tech.

You should be shot for not including the PowerBook G5 option.

I'll probably get a 12" PowerBook G5 if the price is right, although I'd prefer a (10.8"x7.2") 13" widescreen 1.6 GHz PowerBook G5 970GX at 1152x768.

Well, when I bought my Dual G5 2.0GHz a few months ago I told myself I'd would sell it as soon as a 3.0GHz G5 came out so I could pick up one of them puppies. But, given how much I like this system, I think I'll wait for another revision of the 3.0GHz+ G5 before I upgrade.

My dad's beige G3 just died, so we've already ordered a new iMac G5 (20") and will be receiving it sometime next week.

Unless refurbed Dual 2.5s drop to $2000 after the next speed bump!

OK, that settles it. The new iMac G5 will be announced within 3 weeks. (And yes, I'm serious... I do think a new iMac G5 will be here VERY soon.)

P.S. I hope you're aware of the excellent refurb deals Apple has at the moment. The 20" is available for $1599 with 160 GB hard drive and Superdrive.

My G5 dual1.8 is only a year old, so my next machine will probably replace my Ti/400. This said, I don't know when that will happen, as it's still chugging along just fine for me.

Heck, my G4 was 5 years old as of March 22, and it's still going strong. Granted, all the important parts (processor, video card, optical and hard drives, RAM) have been upgraded far beyond the original stock. I'd thought about keeping it around after I get a new tower, but I have no use for 2 computers.

I'm waiting for the next G5 revision. Back to a desktop machine for me. I'll keep my Ti867 for my portable needs. I'm hoping to upgrade this summer.

I currently have a Rev b 12" powerbook, but a G4 1Ghz is starting to feel slow. I figure I'll hold out until 10.5 and get an iMac bundled with the new operating system. The powerbook would then be relegated to portable only status.

Point taken. I tend to go through computers faster than that, but the Beige G3 which the PMG5 replaced was well into its fourth year. The Ti/400 will be hitting that age this year, but I'm hoping that it will last longer (though I need to get the bottom case replaced).

should be a poll option for "upgrade current box".

My next computer purchase will be a dual processor card for my G4. Prices are still more than a mac mini right now though... sheesh.

I don't tend to think that far ahead, so far my computer buying has been kinda sparadic... My first modern Mac was an iBook 366, then an iBook 600, then a dual 1.25Ghz Power Mac G4, now I have a 20" iMac G5... Next? Who knows. I only decided on the iMac when I saw one and realised I had to have one...

Very good, I agree.

I'm looking forward to a new Power Mac G5.

Yeah, I'm aware of both of those "issues" – but my dad doesn't care (and he's paying for it, so who am I to argue? ). I think he'll settle for "whatever", since anything's faster than that old G3 was (266 MHz, and OS 8.6, which would crash even while starting up… awful).

Well going by my history, my first mac was a performa in 1996, then my current G4 in 2001. So my next mac might be next year, but as it is I'm happy with my G4 right now, it's running OS X 10.3 (specs below) and I'm not seeing it as a slow computer yet. My first mac was for Uni, so I really used that for photoshop/illustrator etc. This G4 has been more for casual photoshopping, typing and internet/email, so maybe the next one won't be a tower, maybe an iMac or laptop mac, really don't know at the moment.

Look after my manor, or I will bum you, literally, to death.

I voted for a Powerbook (15") which I plan to purchase this summer (in lieu of going to WWDC), but I am also in the market for a Mac mini to use as a dedicated Subversion/automated build server for my development work. It'll be nice to get that load of my dual 2ghz g5[/brag]

That means my next computer will be a NeXT Computer! :-D

Dell 24inch lcd (they let you switch until you are happy with no dead pixels, and no backlighting issues),a computer I'll build consisting of a dual core socket 939 amd64. Probably a 3500 or better, 2 gig of pc3200, 800gig to 1tb of nice ncq hard drives (split between 2 sata drives). I'll keep my current dvd burner until hd-dvd or bluray wins out (hopefully hd-dvd), winxp/64 until longhorn is released. Some mid range graphics card (whatever is $200-$250 when I buy).

I voted for Dell - but an explaination is below.

I have a dual 2.5GHz G5 w/ a Radeon X800 XT which is relatively new (bought the machine in January). My wife/kids have a 6 week old 1.8GHz 17" iMac G5, and my laptop (1 yr old 1.33GHz 12" PBG4) is more than adequate.

However, I do also require a PC at home for work-related reasons (a real machine; VPC wont cut it). Right now, its an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (2.21GHz Barton core) on an Asus nForce 2 Ultra mobo, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9800 Pro, and a 120GB HD. And while the PC is fast enough at present, it will probably be the first to be replaced since its by far the oldest machine in the house.

So, while it'll probably be at least a year until I need to buy another computer (unless I determine I also need a PC-based laptop in the coming months), it will be the PC that gets replaced first.

You can always pass that 3200 over to me I'm on a 2500 myself, but from the newer specs MS has released even it should run the 32bit version of longhorn fine.
