I just upgraded my phone to a Nokia 6620, up from a 3650. The 3650 interfered with my compter speakers at home and at work, but it was negligible. With this new phone I get this MASSIVE amount of noise over my speakers, even when the volume itself is low. Anyone have this problem? Would newer speakers be better shielded? The speakers I have are quite old.

Yes, the speakers are the issue. The more shielded, the less your phone will irritate them.

GSM phones have always caused that "tr dt dt, tr dt dt" interference.

Typically, it is being received in the wire connecting the computer (or other audio source) to the amplifier (which in the case of computer speakers is built-in). Getting better-shielded cables between the computer and the speakers should do the trick. (The cables connecting the speakers to the amplifier should not matter in this case.)

Pefect description of the sound.

I never knew/noticed it was just a GSM thing. That explains my T-Mobile phones making the speakers at my former job go nuts. It doesn't happen here at my new job, b/c the speaker wires are routed out back and under the desk, with the CPUs on the floor. Everything was desktop at the old place.

Oddest thing yet, I heard the above-described sound in my mom's car (2002 Honda Accord), with my T-Mobile phone in the center console the other day. I've never heard this happen in a vehicle before (Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Golf, GMC Envoy).

I remmeber when my old telus phone would cause my PowerMac 5400 to crash when it rang, or if it was near a monitor cause it to go super funny. Gotta love the brain scramble from every call

PS my old phone was a CDMA not GSM

That's funny. I guess Apple was not testing their Macs against cell phones. It is all written in the FCC warning in the back of your phone: may cause undesired operation of your other electronics.

My former GSM phone made noises in my car radio, but my current CDMA doesn't do it.

My Nextel goes "THK! THK! THK! THK! THK!" all the time with computer speakers. It's funny when I'm at a customer's office and all of a sudden their computer speakers start making this loud noise. Confused, they look at me as though Armageddon has begun. I say "Err, I think I have a phone call coming in..."

My SE T637 bothers the car radio a bit, but almost never computer speakers.

Cell phones are strange. I have crappy 5.1 speakers (lots of unshielded cables) and I get no interference from either of my cell phones (Nokia/Cingular and Motorola/T-mobile). If I have my phone underneath my monitor (19" NEC) I get a distorted image sometimes but not always. On the other hand a phone within 10 feet of my girlfriends clock radio will create the most irritating buzzing sound ever heard. When a call comes in its worse but sometimes it just happens for no reason. I also get interference with the radio in her car when listening to the radio, but I never get feedback in my car at home (same car but with a Sony cd player instead of the stock radio).

I notice it all the time with my DLO Transpod and my Treo. It doesn't seem to be as bad as with my K700, but all GSM phones do it. Think of it as Pre-CallerID

I usually put my phone in a mesh pencil cup. That helps but it doesn't totally eliminate it.

Any one know what that is called? Gaussian shield?

haaha, and I have one of those cups right here.

Both my pro speaker/isub set and my klipsch 5.1 set get interference when I put the phone close -- but it's totally random, almost never has to do with getting a call..

On that one, sometimes the cordless phone drives my cordless mouse crazy.

It does it in my car sometimes (Civic with a Blaupunkt head unit), namely when I am using my iPod as the source, meaning that the long iPod input cable is hanging out just a few feet from my pocket.

I've never seen a CDMA phone cause audible interference.

Nextel uses a proprietary TDMA-based standard. GSM is also a TDMA-based standard, so it might just be something peculiar to the TDMA multiplexing method. (The TDMA-based standard that is often just called "TDMA" is the one used on AT&T and Cingular's pre-GSM networks. I would expect them to also induce periodic interference.)

Tell me about it! Last time I left my cell phone too close to my TV, when I received a call, the TV suddenly jumped up and started running around the room, throwing my dirty laundry all over the place as it ran, and then it emptied the contents of my waste-paper basket over my head.

Undesired operation indeed!

So true... no matter I'm in front of my Mac or while driving. Anyway, I heard similar noise in the computer lab as well, those students just turned around and checked what's going on.

I know about 2 seconds before my phones rings I have a call because my CRT display flickers.

Is this because of the cord or what is it exactly? I have a GSM service...
