Can I backup songs from the itunes music store and still be able to play them when I save them back on my computer.

I noticed when backing up some songs on my friends computer that I wasn't able to play them in quicktime and required a password to play them in itunes. I don't know any thing about this itunes purchased songs so was wondering if I back them up on cds if it (itunes) will think they are pirated and not let me play them anymore.

The way the ITMS works is that you have to "authorize" computers to play songs you downloaded. That's why it didn't work on your friend's computer.

So long as your computer is properly authorized, you're OK.
