Sorry Demonhood, Xeo, ThinkInsane (no particular order)

I resolved my problem in a timely matter because i posted it in the lounge and not in the OS forum. I know this is wrong and for that I am sorry. Will there ever be a way for us to delete our own threads? I hope i didnt cause too much trouble. If nothing else, atleast others will get this info too and ... maybe in some little way, others will benefit from this thread being in the lounge as well.

I WILL try to qualify this thread by atleast making it lounge related in some way... But I cant think up a topic. Feel free to umm ... talk about all the times you posted in the wrong thread. Whether it was on purpose or an accident ... Hey, Just trying to right a wrong here...

I know this is the wrong forum, but this is the only one that gets much attention and you guys know your stuff. Please Help!

I just got my powerbook back from applecare servicing (picked up at SF apple store)

After reinstalling OSX and doing all the upgrades, i downloaded the usual stuff (shapeshifter, adium, etc)

after tinkering a while, i reboot and my finder isnt loading, and i cant launch it. a restart came up with the same problem...

i restarted it again, and now it wont even get into osx. it shows a globe icon or something .. blinking. it's in front of a grey background.

anyone know what the problem is? Is there a way i can do a reinstall by putting in the osx disc and holding down some button to force it to load the cd or to a hardware check?!?

I remember reading about it but couldnt find it in the OSX forum. Please forgive me for posting this here, but I know i wont get a response for many hours since it's night time. Sorry again mods ... *hides*

Sounds like it might be trying to Netboot or something. Start off the OS X cd by putting it in and holding down CD, and then change your startup disk back to the hard drive.

No, if his machine is trying to NetBoot he won't actually be booting into OS X at all yet.

Single user mode would probably be best after he gets OS X booting again. Then again, he could just run Disk Utility from the install cd.

look .. 3 responses already. look at the last responses for the osx forum. i think people who frequent that forum are in bed already. it seems night owls gravitate to the lounge (as i did and still do).

What is netboot and how the hell did that happen? ..

I have a 12inch powerbook rev c.
i think my osx is on a dvd. it's panther.

What do you mean by holding down CD ... is CD command (apple) or is it the letter's C and D or is it CD as in eject button ....???

thanks for replying though =)

oh and randman .. i saw that coming. i just hope a mod is lenient .. since i just got it back and i cant do anything with it (including typing up notes for class)

sorry again .. i just figured this wouldnt be too much trouble ... in any case, i'm going to load the osx dvd and hold down command. see what that gets me, i'll report back in a bit.

holding down apple doesnt work, holding down the letters C and D together dont work .. how long do i have to hold it down for, or what not? I'm still getting the icon, which i've now identified to be the western hemisphere (north and south) with the eastern pacific and western atlantic oceans =D

Any idea's?

Yeah, sorry, "C" for cd.

Once you're booted in there there should be a Utilities menu. Use Disk Utility to repair your hard disk, and Startup Disk to set your hard disk to the startup disk.

You should just be able to get to the Utilities menu.

yup, bingo! I love you guys =P.

I just clicked repair disk and it said it's fine or something along those lines. so now i set it to repair permissions to see if anything comes up. what's verify disk permissions and verify disk do?

oh .. one other hint. i remember among the last things i did was download macjanitor and was doing a permissions repair thing ... could that have caused it? I'm still confused how netboot happened. *phew* now i know the c key will get me into utilities .. thank god (used to windows .. never had any problems with osx)

See?!? Randman, this is why i posted it in the lounge. you night owls are helpful. the guru's in the osx forum are asleep, so they can wake up bright and early to stock the genius bar

Thanks again guys

Couldn't have been MacJanitor. MacJanitor doesn't deal with permissions anyway. Still, glad to see it all worked. My original tweaking was because I use Show New Posts 99% of the time and assumed everyone else did as well. But I hate disorganization.

Night owls? You know that the world has different time zones, don't you!?
I am going for lunch in 1 hour and so do many who post in the OS X forum...

Nothing really - it just tells you what it would do if you would let it! For me it's just a waste of time...

doh double post (because the server goes down at 1:30am where i live) so i'll turn it into a reply post to the guy with the airbus sig (sorry .. i set it on edit so i cant read your original post)

i figure most people on here is from the united states (although i know a lot of people around the world frequent macnn, the postings tend to die down when it's night time in the US)

anyhoo =) it's all fixed .. god was i scared. man ... everything went downhill since last night when the apple wouldnt load osx. since that time, i dropped a class, and i dropped a bar on my face/neck when i was bench pressing today... and it wasnt even my max too ... guess i shouldnt get too careless on equiptment that i dont use much (not my usual workout place)..

ow ... still, things seem to be looking up from now on.
