I dont think they are much better than Apples High Quality ones.
There is much more impressive speech technology out there.

I think it's pretty lame that this has to install something in /System/Library/Speech/Synthesizers.

Of course, since moving it to /Library/Speech/Synthesizers didn't solve the problem, it's probably Apple's fault...

Yep, but all of them are Windows only.

And the fact that you apparently have to put something in /System to add your own synthesizer (and I wouldn't be surprised if that interface were undocumented either) might explain this.

BTW, here's another third-party TTS engine I found that seems to have an OS X version. They seem a little better than the Cepstral voices, although still obviously not the best around. They do support a lot of languages, though.

Barely better than the build in voices unfortunately. But still a step forward
