A friend of mine keeps raving about it, and I keep wondering what real use you get out of it. Does anyone really need PGP to send email to their friends? Because I don't think "Hi, Bob...how was your weekend" shows a real need for PGP. Anyone?

But most people use GPG, instead, since it is a free replacement to the proprietary PGP.

I think it would be great if everyone used this. There is no reason why we should be sending around unprotected text when e-mail has become such a prolific means of communication. Most people don't even know that every e-mail they send is completely readable by people other than the recipient. I know adults who have sent credit card numbers, social security numbers, and other sensitive data to family members not even realizing that other people could potentially read everything they typed.

The problem is that GPG isn't easy to setup and use. That, and not enough people use it. I really think some big name e-mail providers need to include this functionality in an easy-to-use way and maybe even make it turned on by default.

I did send a feature request to Gmail asking them to include GPG support. I keep hoping they'll sneak it in there.

It's useful. I don't like worrying about privacy, so I spent some effort on it, and now I don't have to worry about it (as long as I don't give away my password, or do something similarly stupid) as I have a pretty good expectation of privacy. I'd have to be a bit more proactive to keep out the NSA, but I probably won't cross anyone with the resources to break into my home, my computer, and the encryption as well.

I've seen PGPMail in action, it's very useful and easy, if you want to start with PGP in Mail.app there's probably no easier way.
