There are some songs that sound good no matter who covers them (well, almost).
One of my favs is the old Elmore James classic Shake Your Moneymaker.
Damn, I love just about every version of that tune. Nothing like some raunchy ol' blues!

I'm glad you qualified that; I can imagine a lot of songs going straight down the tubes just because someone like Tammy Fay covered them.

There are a lot of what I consider "classic" tunes from the '70s that could be thought of as in that same category, such as Bad, Bad Leroy Brown. And anything from George Clinton (Parliament-Funkadelic) should be completely safe-I cannot imagine anyone who could bork up a Clinton song even trying to cover one.
Unfortunately, some songs that I thought were great WERE destroyed by others covering them. Marylin Manson's version of Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This is just one of a number of issues he'll have to deal with the Almighty over when the time comes.
*** On Feel The Noize looks pretty safe; it's been covered several times and comes out pretty much the same every time. Most people don't know that Quiet Riot's version is a cover; Slade released it in February of 1973!

I like Slade. Had no idea the song was theirs. I went to iTunes to check out the original, but the Slade they have is NOT the Slade I was looking for.

ANY song can be covered badly.
Eg. Johnny Cash and Hurt.
The only songs that can't be covered badly are those not worth listening to in the first place.
