Now that Tiger has been announced and the new name Bonjour appears to be in full swing, I thought I'd come and rant about it. They couldn't think of anything better? I'd rather have some technical acronym than 'Bonjour'. ZiNC would have been good, for Zero Network Configuration, or IRDE, for It's Really Damn Easy, I could come up with better names all day!

Ya those are really user friendly. You like all these letters and junk just like your user name right?

Personally I think they should have called it Freedom Networking

Bad name. Not horribly, wretchedly, awful name, but Rendezvous (which isn't a wonderfully good name either) is better. IMO, of course.

What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Apple had to change it, because another company already had a product named Rendezvous. I guess they could've picked a better name, though.

Not bad... could have been better...

Considering they were forced to change the name, they probably wanted to keep it something VERY similar.

Bonjour seems rather logical.

ZiNC = cool.

Bonjour = horribly, horribly wretched. Whoever thought of that should be hung. Whoever authorised it should be hung, drawn, and quartered.

Apple Next-Generation Base for Zero Network Configuration Networking!

Put it in a control panel with 4 levels of performance:

[Off] - - [On]

Just like Microsoft and its hardware acceleration! You can now have partially on and partially off zero network config!
Aloha

anyone else see this on the Bonjour page?

Soon, anyone using a PC can take advantage of the effortlessness of Bonjour for free, too, as Apple will release a Windows version in the first half of 2005. The Bonjour Setup Wizard makes setting up a printer under Windows as easy as Mac OS X (we can’t make it as beautiful, unfortunately). Bonjour for Windows includes a plug-in for Internet Explorer, so you can setup a Bonjour-enabled device without knowing its IP address. You can even print to printers connected over USB to Airport Extreme Base Station or Airport Express. If you’re an Open Source enthusiast, you will be able to download the Bonjour source code to create software for virtually any platform.
Back on topic... I think the name isn't too hot, though not horrible.

Those ****ing French, with all of their gross hand gestures and their smelly metro. The only reason anyone likes them is because the French hate America. Apart from that, there is nothing to like about them.

Hmm, Anthony Bourdain (whose of French descent) used that in Kitchen Confidential before The Simpsons swiped it.

Good line though.

It's also used extensively in the south of Jutland, though I think they usually spell it mojn instead.

How about "Appointment"?

There 's silliness in-yar-face...

What's in a name?

I guess that's why they needed a French name that has an International ring to it, without being known enough to be spoiled by some blasé opinion.

Personally, I do not give a damn. Corporate decisions are always oriented with a certain percentage coming from the creativity of the CEO and marketing. Indeed, some of the rights will find reasons for debating it on the sole basis that it is French, while others (and there are many) will debate it for its esthetical attributes.

It's all in our minds and no one holds the truth, except the owner of the idea.

I think that about sums it up. I guess the idea was to stay with a similar naming convention.

It's just a weak name in my opinion.
