What he said. Can't even imagine TV without it. It's sheer pain watching the tube w/o it after 4 years with TiVo.

Up until very recently they were about $900 bucks, so most people stayed away.

I hear that they work great though.

I have a four year old combination direct TV Tivo box by sony and its great. At school I use Eye-TV and I really find it hard to watch TV that I can't pause. I don't care for archive as much as I care for a live tv buffer, so the dvd burner doesn't interest me so much.

tivo series 2 now lets you pull your show off the box onto your computer and burn it on dvd. windoze only for right now but a mac versino should be out soon. pretty tough encryption tho. but BELIEVE ME you can get around it. i take a lot of the new shows off, cut the commercials with final cut, and burn it with toast.

The Humax Series 2 one is "only" $399 I believe...not bad compared to what they used to be.

Except that it costs a decent amount of money, will about 30-45 minutes to transfer one half hour show to your Mac, then set up a shared folder in VPC, download and buy Dr. DiVx (because you can't watch the show in VPC because it's so slow), then it'll take about 3 hours to convert it to an AVI file, which can then be played, very shoddily in VLC. So if you are willing to not pirate the software and pay about $400 and put about 4 hours into converting every half hour show you want to watch then yes, it's a perfect solution.

TiVo, love the idea, couldn't live with out it, but they've really stabbed Mac users in the back. For more see the tivocommunity.com forum. It's a raging issue right now with the way they've handled this thing.

actually not. i can't speak for virtual pc because i used my windows machine. it took about 30 - 45 minutes to transfer i'll give you that. but its already in mpeg2 format so you don't really have to convert it to avi, just break the encryption. this literally takes less then 5 minutes. there are plenty of ways to do this (google). then you have a file that will play on your mac. in order to edit commercials i used quicktime to convert to mov (15 min tops). your right there is a huge set back for the mac community. but besides transfering it really is an easy process to get a working file for the mac. of course this assuming you have a copy of virtual pc and or a pc.
