I got in my first accident ever last night. I was cruising home from work on I-75 in Flint Township and I saw up ahead, in the middle lane, a small fawn just standing there. So I slowed down to about 45 mph and thought I'd just cruise on past it. Oh no. The deer does a complete 180 turn and leaps right into me car. I had no idea it could have happened so fast. I ended up hitting it doing around 35-40 mph.
If anyone is familiar with this area it was around the exit for Corunna rd. on I-75 south bound. This is a very developed area and the officer who came and made the police report said he had never heard of deer running around in the area.
I had an estimate done and damages totalled $1,800. Not too bad considering I need a new hood, headlight, emblem bracket, and fender.
Pics possibly later tonight when I get home.

I found out the hard way that if you see one deer, you will probably have more waiting to run out at the worst possible time. Also, if one runs across the road, you can't expect it to stay there. Also, if the guy in front of you hits a deer, don't expect him to stop. I ran over a deer lying in the middle of the road because the guy in front of me hit it, it didn't get up, and he kept going. I never noticed, and ran right over the thing (in the middle of the night, with nowhere to swerve). Stupid deer.

Here they are:
(note: no gore, I didn't have my camera with me when it happened.)
Not too bad, mostly aesthetic and a headlight/blinker unit.
Front end.
A little deer fur.
Headlight hole. The whole unit was hanging by a blinker light cable, so I unclipped it and put it in the trunk.
Side.
I need a new hood, headlight unit, emblem bracket, and fender. Not too bad. Still driveable, Just not at night with out the headlight.

At least you didn't die. Happens a lot around where I used to live. (South Dakota sucks)
At least it wasn't a moose. That would have killed you for sure.

There are a lot of deer in this area. I keep a close watch and am usually successful at avoiding a collision. I probably see 3-4 deer everyday either on the way to or from work.
I was certain I was going to avoid this one. I saw it a mile away and because I was on the expressway I didn't want to come to a complete stop at 1 am. I thought I could maneuver around behind it, but it spun and leapt before I could have responded. Next time I will look in my rearview mirror and try to see if it is safe to stop.

There's something going on around here, all right. I never remember seeing so many deer in the freeway before. The other day there were 3 of them running around the M-59/I-75 clover at 3:00 in the afternoon. And, now I'm seeing wild turkeys just north of town - just picking for bits on the shoulder of I-75 like nobody's business.
The only thing I can figure is all the development and all the road work disrupting them and making them homeless - and now, dead.

That sucks. At least there wasn't more damage and it didn't roll up the hood and come through the windshield.
About 5 years ago, I had a head on collision with a car that hit a deer and lost control. Luckily, it was a little Toyota station wagon and my Jeep only had a busted radiator and grill. The poor little Toyota was totalled.
Out here in AZ, we have tons of wildlife on the roads right now. There's been so much rain that all the animals are trying to find new places to live. I saw about 20-30 dead rabbits on the road in 1 place and had an elk jump over my hood last week. We've already had more rattlesnake bites so far this season than there were in either of the last 2 years total. When I got home last night, our parking lot was overrun with cute little bunnies.

When I got my first car, I was driving down the road when a dog ran across the street and hit my car. Thankfully it hit the side of my car so it didn't get hurt. I still remember that yelp though.
On a related note, a bird did the same thing today and bumped my car as it was flying away (I drove beside it). It then got hit by an SUV.

Wonder if you guys can top this:
My friend got IMPALED by a bird on the left side of her face. She was driving on the highway with her driver's side window open and a bird flew right into it and smacked into her face at about 70Mph. It missed her left eye by about 1/2 an inch and went into her nasel cavity. She has a pretty big scar there.
It's funny now when we talk about it cuz she escaped major injory, but I can't imagine being stabbed with a bird... in the head.

I hit a dear about 2.5 years ago. It was on a road with trees close to the edge. The dear was running full out. Neither one of us had a chance to see each other until it was too late. The bad part was that at the time the car was only one month old.

Way to go, Popeye.
The deer does a complete 180 turn and leaps right into me car.
At least no one was hurt (No, the deer doesn't count).

Deer are so stupid... I've hit 2 that have caused damage so far...
Once in a rental (Ford explorer)... did about 1k in damage...hit the thing head on late at night in a wooded area on a back highway.
Another time in the early afternoon in the cornfields of Iowa...I was in a rental car and a deer bolted across the road so I slowed down to about 10 miles an hour in case another one came out..........another deer came out ....and rammed directly into the side of the car.... it buckled in the front side quarter panel which cost about 600 dollars to replace...and gave me whiplash/sore neck for about 2 months.. ugh....the whiplash was a result of being so shocked by the deer ramming into the side of the car. It is just not something you are expecting.
I live in NYC but do alot of traveling in the midwest....first deer was in Missouri... 2nd in Iowa...... both times my Visa card covered the claim with the rental car companies....
A very good reason to use your Visa card as they provide insurance automatically for such things so you can skip the insurance offered by the rental car companies.

My only other automobile "incident" other than this accident was when a deer ran into the side of my car while I was stopped at a expressway off-ramp. Put a fist sized dent into the side of the door skin.
Deer are indeed stupid.
And tasty.
