i got a freelance job at a company and it still uses os 9 workflow. The computer that i worked on has two different photoshop versions (6 & 7). How can i double click the finder icon and tell the application to open into photoshop 6 instead of 7?

Which icon do you mean? Besides, 7 is better!

From memory, you can't specify a specific version of Photoshop for it to open in - unless you were to hack one Photoshop version with ResEdit to change its creator code to something else.

Instead, just place a Photoshop 6 and a Photoshop 7 alias on your desktop, and drag to the appropriate icon depending on which version you want to open in.

Still using OS 9... wow... how fast are their Macs? I can't imagine going back to OS 9... I tried the other day on my iMac and while I have fond memories of OS 9 (and actually it's still the only thing I've found that can make OS X think my Digital Camera is named anything other than untitled) I couldn't imagine going back to doing design under it.

I think you click on the file, hit command-I, and set it there.

Just as in OSX, you right click (or control click) on a file and then select open with. It'll present you with a list of applications.

PurpleGiant has hit the nail on the head here.

If memory serves, you could install PS6 after PS7, and then images would open in PS6, but that would affect every Photoshop image on the system, which doesn't sound like what you want. Other than this, your best bet is ResEdit hackery.

If you work in PS6 exclusively and don't need to use PS7 ... why don't you simply compress the application to a zip/site archive and trash the original? Thereafter, any psd file will automatically open in PS6. Once your freelance job is completed, decompress the PS7 app and be done with it.
