SGI has unveiled his first linux desktop, the 'little' Prism workstation, do you like this kind of form factor better than taller and taller desktop computers?

It looks little but compare it to that monitor.

They had IRIX for years, IRIX is the very own SGI version of UNIX, now they are switching to linux and this is their first desktop (worksation) runing linux, the original Prism, no this one, is a visualization system not a 'desktop' computer.
But, do you like this one?, for me it transmits much more 'visual power' that just tall but thin towers.

I wrote 'little' because there is another Prism, the typical SGI beast, kinda refrigerator style, not aimed to place it in your desktop BTW, that is just a Sony 23" inches with the SGI logo if I recall right.

Yes. SGI desktops are huge (tall and wide) even compared to G5s. Though they do their own job well they offer little value for money for the type of work the G5 can do just as well. The deskside Prism starts at $8000 for one Itanium CPU, FireGL T2 (a workstation card based on the Radeon 9700), 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, CDROM, SGI Linux and Open Office (which is a free app anyway). For that price you can get the top G5, top graphics card, load it with RAM, HDD space and get lots of pro applications.

Well, I doubt anyone is going to get this SGI to do 2D and/or video work, in the same way I doubt Exxon Mobil is going to buy G5s to search for oil and so, I am not comparing the work computers do, just their form factor.

I like the way that one looks but I think taller is a better idea as it takes up less desk space. Not many people need the air above their desk for storage.

I HATE it when PC's have that cheap plastic door covering the CD drive in front.
Also, why do the hard drives need to be in a bay in the front?? Do people need to remove those things often?

Note, these are deskside machines, which means they are big and heavy, like my Octane, which would collapse my desk if I tried to put it on it.

If this baby is like any other workstation I've seen, it'll be loud as hell. And heavy.

Ya because they are usually missing things like gigabit ethernet and firewire.

It comes with four little wheels

With this kind of computers you are supposed to be able to swap hard drives in a snap, that is a feature I like, really, as easy as to insert a zip disc into a zip drive, it is fantastic.

So true!, and the worst thing, you can not put them at sleep mode!
that's pretty standard in PCs...
up to 24 GB of RAM are not !

Wouldn't a firewire or USB zip drive make 10x more sense?

... sleep mode? That's like vacation for a computer, right?

Eh, what?
(Explanation: it's not to exchange data, it's to exchange the harddisk only. All parts are designed so you can easily replace them. You can replace the fans in my IBM server without a screwdriver.)
