I'm working on a climbing community site, because I don't really think there is a good one out there. I've got some good contacts in climbing, and think we have a chance to make a decent community around climbing, sort of like how we have a good one around macs.

There are lots of designers on here, and I'd love some feedback on this design, if you feel it works for this type of site, and any improvements you might have, I'd love to hear. You helped my dead towns project so much.

looks like this is off to a very nice start - the three-column layout works very well for this type of site. I'd love to take a closer look - would you mind putting up a version of the preview with less artifacts (e.g., jpg, png) - if you also have a larger version of the logo to peek at, that be cool.

i think a mix of the two. i feel that the grey borders on krux2.gif give (me) a claustrophobic feeling. being trapped between the two columns. this goes against the feeling i get when i am climbing. there is nothing claustrophobic about being 30 meters up a mountain and having a view of a a few kilometers.

i like the krux2.gif layout of each news post. (news: title (comments)) and i prefer the bigger font on krux2.gif. i think the big News below the small red news is a little redundant. each post tells what it is, and right above the News text there is a red news showing you which page you are on.

other than that, it's great, and i'd love a link to the site

The biggest problem I have with krux2 is what mdc said. Its too claustraphobic. Climbing is an open, but focused activity. This is what I'm trying to accomplish here. The cleanliness hopefully translates to a focus that you try to achieve while climbing. Climbing is also a game of bursts of intensity and rest periods, this is sort the idea behind the red and the blue.

Here is a better quality version of it

Thanks for the feedback thus far. I would also appreciate any ideas on how to build a community. I know several of our members have done so, and obviously DH and other know what they're doing. If anyone wants to chime in along those lines, I'm all ears.

Update:

Here is a graphic with a bigger logo, and a fake magazine cover I did a while back that served as the inspiration for this site. I made this as a portfolio peice to get in to art school.

three main quibbles of mine ... header, spacing, font usage (for some reason I feel that a font with a more slender appearance, like Helvetica would fit the context better). I also feel a tiny bit uneasy about the logo ... the "r" looks a bit like it's about to tip over and kill the "u" ... here's how I would approach the layout ...

gotta run ... more comments later
