So, someone sent me an MPEG and asked if I thought it was for real.

I'm not sure. It LOOKS real.

I've uploaded it to a site so that you can download it - don't worry, it's only like 532kb so it's small. Make sure you have your sound up.

Link

At the bottom of the page select "Free" then it takes you to another page and you can click on the link at the bottom where it says "stunt1.mpeg."

Tell me what you think?

That's obviously faked - you can see the second car moves through his legs before he appears to get knocked down, play it frame by frame.

I tried that and I didn't see that.

HOW did they do it, then?

Oldest trick in the book.

Go frame by frame. As the first car passes by and the guy jumps his leading foot disappears behind the oncoming car for a few frames before both feet appear to be above the car. If he were head on with the car both feet would would appear in every frame as he jumped over it. And if he had dragged a foot as he was jumping he would have gone ass-over-elbow into the windshield of the oncoming car.

As to the second car, the same thing happens. His body crumples behind the oncoming car. And he does some fancy footwork to make it appear he is getting carried along by the car.

Good find, Cody!

This trick takes advantage of our depth perception so that when we see something that appears to be right at a person it is really just slightly behind or in front of them. This is how they did sword fights in the movies, and occassionaly the theatre, for decades. The guy getting stabbed has the sword go under his arm that is away from the frame but to the viewer it appears to go right through him. However, the effect only really works when people are framed in profile.

watch his shadow on the ground. there is a section of it missing (about his shadow's midsection). the grey of the street has been post productioned over something that he steps onto and jumps off.

if you watch it frame by frame you can see that he jumps off this "hidden" item and not the car's bonnet.

i guess they did not get around to post productioning his shadow.

If you blow it up big enough you can psycally see the editing with his shadow, and as you arrow forward through the movie you can see his first step before the car even gets to him. Defently an edited movie and a fake, but it is cool.

It freaked me out the first time I saw it.

I just went "OH!"

The thump and everything is disturbing.

I'd like to know whose it is.

Well, I'm on my way to buy a new PowerBook. I broke down.

Thanks everyone!

I haven't watched the vid, but from the description, I've seen this before, and I'm fairly sure last time I saw it I followed a link from here.

The knife trick/hammer trick done by these guys is better.
Not sure where the site is due to the fact that someone edited the links out of the video.

It's quite amazing to watch. The joys of the editor.

Ah...this one has been floating around on the net for a while.
Good point about the shadow editing being noticeable, I didn't see that before.

The fact that the second car made no attempt to slow down or stop also tends to point to a fake.

It's clearly fake.

Look at the blue car in the upper left corner. When the white car drives by, it can be seen through the blue car's windows. The second car hitting that guy can NOT bee seen through the window. FAKE. As if it needs these things to tell you it is fake...

Often, I think the internet is the kingdom of people who are convinced that the word gullible was removed from the dictionary.

Another way to tell it's a fake is the body on the windshield. At that speed, the body would bounce off the front of the car like a racquetball against a wall.
