Nevada agreed to shut down a state highway for the torpedo-shaped car's attempt to top 300 mph (483 kph) -- which would shatter the old mark of 245 mph (394 kph), set by an American team in 1999 using a similarly streamlined car powered by thousands of "AA" batteries.

They didn't say what type of batteries the new group is using...

I bet they are Lithium Polymer batteries.
We can use a 3oz 11v LiPo cell in the place of a 10oz 8cell 9.6v NiCd pack now and run for 30 minutes compared to 8 minutes before.

I think the long term environmental effects from battery waste would soon be much more serious than our current oil-polution issues. Even rechargable batteries have to be replaced.

These are just for breaking records, we arnt going to be driving cars that run on AA. But serious who would have thought that 6000 AA Batteries could power a car to those speeds.

The adventures of humans always reaching for the frontier. Hopefully the research that lead to this achievement will help all of us in energy efficiency.
