I just read about this online:
http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/05/05/ch...eut/index.html
One thing I've always envied americans are your cheerleaders. We do have cheerleaders over here in Denmark, but they are just not such a big deal. It's only some of the proffesional soccer teams that has cheerleaders, and we sure didn't have any cheerleaders at my highschool.
So is this really gonna happen in Texas? And what will happen in other states?
Link to some Copenhagen cheers:

Education of the children should be a priority. The action of cheerleaders is a result of parenting. Its just part of our secular culture.

Though I don't think there should be laws written about it, I would appreciate being able to take my kids to a football game without having to expose them to blatently sexual dance routines. I have to admit its a little disconcerting that these 16 and 17 year old girls are out there doing pelvic thrusts in front of their communities. When "baby got back" came out, shaking yer thang was kind of controversial, now cheerleaders in the bible bet are getting bootylicious.
Its stupid to make a law, but if it were my daughter, I'd get the cheerleading instructor, or the Principle of the school on the phone, or pull her from the program.
I don't get why we need to make a law for ever stupid thing. I don't go to football games anyway.

I would posit that the only reason for the reaction to this proposed bill is that sports are of near-infinite importance in said communities and the concept of messing with their "sacred sports" is ruffiling a few feathers. Meh - put the money towards CLASSES before f'n sports!

Who is going to be the arbiter that attends the sporting events and determines when the law has been broken? Are there going to be thousands and thousands of No-Sexy-Cheerleading-Enforcers swooping down on every high-school football game in Texas?
Sounds like the Taliban to me.

Don't worry about who would enforce the law; the Taliban is alive and well within some religious fundamentalist circles. There would be plenty of volunteers, especially considering that most of them seem to have sex on the mind to such a degree that they're willing to deny their own feelings, and force others to suppress what they're trying to suppress themselves.

This is one reason that I didn't have to go to the movies much when I lived in Austin; the legislature was always very amusing!
The way I see it, this is a lot of old fogies who are uncomfortable with the fact that "something happens" when they watch high school cheerleaders, so they blame the cheerleaders instead of their own impure thoughts. They're a bunch of dirty old men and over-the-top right-wing so-called-Christians who think that alcohol should be banned because it might lead to-GASP!-dancing!
We in Texas have much more important issues than teenage girls wiggling their booties during high school football and basketball games, and our legislators should be doing better than coming up with this bull. And don't think that they are missing the earful we're sending them!

You mean that each person should be responsible for their own actions and not blame their shortcomings on others?

That's right - there's a huge pot hole on the way to work, and it's been there for about 3 months now... Stop messing with the cheerleaders and get a shovel!

That's not the state's concern. The state should, however, make sure that your county and city are getting enough money to fix the roads, and that they're using that money properly. And they should make sure poor kids don't die from measels because their parents can't afford health insurance. And they need to make sure that there are enough case workers in Child Protective Services so that parents stop killing their kids and foster parents take care of their charges properly. And they need to pay for education in some way that doesn't make 80 year old pensioners risk losing their homes because they can't afford the ever increasing property value assessments (because rates are already at their statutory limit). And they need to find a way to get textbooks for the schools without letting zealots and freaks control the second largest textbook market-and thus the second most influential for the rest of the country-turn into somebody's Sunday School material. Lots and LOTS of things more important to do than worry about 17 year old girls' bottoms shaking during a football game. I mean high school football is close to a religion here, so why are they paying attention to the girls? It's the boys on the field and what they're doing that's importand, right? More important than arts, and basic math skills, and all that wussie stuff.
Yes, I'm ranting. You should hear what I say to my state rep!

I KNOW that there are really good optometrists in Austin, so it's got to be something BEHIND the glasses.

We do? Apart from that one time (not at band camp, though) when Henrik and Jonatan from my high shool class, for reasons known only to themselves, came to a school party in cheering gear, full with pompons and everything, I've never seen any cheerleaders here...
You mean “link to some Danes with waaaay too much time on their hands, and a waaaay too big love for FCK“, right?

Rugby game, Melbourne Storm vs North Queensland Cowboys.
The cheerleaders were for Storm (only the home team has cheerleaders), however I was going for the Cowboys, and they didn't even mind waving the Cowboys flag with me.
Now if only AFL had cheerleaders...
More pics!

Well, I won't put on any airs of being any kind of expert on neither cheerleaders nor sports in general, so I'm probably just ignorant. Come to think of it, I've never seen any American cheerleaders either (outside movies, etc., that is. I have seen them in movies, just not 'the real thing').

Has anyone actually seen the point of posting professional, ADULT cheerleaders on this thread? That they are a counter example to what the Texas Legislature is talking about regulating? I didn't think so.
While I think professional cheerleaders are quite nice to look at, this thread was (originally) about morons in MY STATE that think they need to control what kind of kicking and pompon waving a bunch of high school girls do. At the same time they don't bother to define what they conclude is "improper" behavior, nor do they provide enough detail on enforcement to explain to me who is going to get to be the cheerleader inspector for the State of Texas. With the track record these idiots have, I wouldn't be surprised if they choose the head Rah Rah Checker from the state's list of sex offenders.
Is there anyone here who actually agrees with me that these bozos (whoops! I shouldn't insult a respected clown that way!) should spend a little more time thinking about something other than teenage girls' hinies?

Say what ?
We're in the Lounge. We'll happily hijack any thread to post pics of chicks. Isn't that what the Lounge is all about ?

I don't mind a thread being hijacked, but at least it shouldn't be subverted. I think it's important for people to be able to discuss this sort of legal horse sh|t, and at the same time be able to enjoy pictures of professional cheerleaders, but not at the same time.
I'm frustrated; have the majority of people watching this thread decided that this is a non-issue?

The thing is, this sort of crap happens in every state. Here it's cheerleaders, somewhere else it's appropriateness of sineage on local roads, another place has problems with ownership of street curbing, and all of them have much more serious problems that should be dealt with first.
If people are laughing at Texas because of this, that's good. I can tell my representatives that's what's going on, and their laughingstock status might change if they actually worked for the people. If they're just ignoring this, then maybe they ignore what goes on at home... Not a good thing for anyone.
