Happy Mother's Day to all mothers!

This is just a friendly reminder to get your beloved mother a card...or call her to tell her that you love her...or make her breakfast...or get her flowers.

Every year at Mother's Day I get each person in my family a gift from myself to them because I want them to know that the day isn't just special to me...but special to all of us because our family is so great. I know that they have gotten me something, but I don't know what yet. I told them I wanted mundane useful things like a new cutting board, or a new mixer (mine burned up making biscotti dough about a month ago), or iWork. Yesterday they all got together and cleaned the entire house so that I wouldn't have to and believe it or not, that meant a lot to me. Silly and simple, but true.

What are any of you fellow MacNNers doing for mom today? Even if you don't live in the U.S. and don't have "Mother's Day" you can still pretend it's Mother's Day wherever you are.

Anything particularly creative?

Well, that's a good thing...you could give her a verbal I.O.U.

Then, I'm headed to work; to serve meals to everyone else -
and their Mothers; and we are totally over booked.
I'll be pretty glad when this day is over; around midnite.

Happy Moms Day Cody.

...flowers in a beautiful vase (since flowers, you know, die...).

and a happy Mother's Day to you, Cody, and any others rummaging around on the boards...
Now what will I do for my mother-in-law, that's the question?

Do you like her?

If you do, chocolate. Go to Walmart and get the big 1 pound box of Whitman's Chocolates. They really are the very best you can buy for the money - about $8.

If you don't like her, get her something REALLY nice...

The same thing.

Walmart chocolates? Yes, that'll make a statement....

My mom will get a phone call. She hates mother's day. Her argument is if we need a special day to think of her then she's not interested. I'm liking her thinking. Got my brother and me off the hook many a time.

I gave my mom a hug.
Seeing how she lives in AZ and I live in MD, that's not a little thing.
She's on her way to the airport now, but we had a nice family brunch this morning.

A G5...and a hug?

Those are both great gifts.

Walmart is just a store. You can buy Whitman's anywhere. Since Walmart is ubiquitous, I mentioned it.

Whitman's are the best.

I called. Spent an hour just talking about all kinds of stuff. Didn't need Mother's Day to do that, but she appreciated it more than any silly gift like flowers or chocolate.

Might go up to the cemetary.. other than that a sad mothers day indeed.

I wished my mum a happy mother's day...

Cody - Whitman's? Nah, I'll go to my local interesting food store and find some Lindt. At $8 or so for about a pound of assorted nano-Bars, I'm good.

Don't try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

What nice posts.

Sorry to hear some of you are sad over not being able to see or speak to your mothers for various reasons. That's sad. My mother died a while back so I know how it feels, to be honest.

I just got back from returning a mixer that I did not want and exchanged it for some things I DID want.

My husband had a ring made for me that has the birthstones of our children bezel-set in white gold. It's beautiful. I probably won't wear it because I do not like to wear jewelry, but it's beautiful and it took some thought beforehand.

I also got a spice rack and a cutting board. I wanted chocolate, but I'm off of all sugar.

I've had a nice Mother's Day.

My wife and I got my mom a really nice summer purse. She's going to Hawaii in a few weeks and we thought it would make a useful and nice gift for her.

My wife didn't want to get anything for her mom- they have not been on speaking terms for several years now.

Thanks. To be honest I'm happy she died.. and she probably is too. The misery she lived with for over 20 years was more than anyone should have to.

So appreciate your mothers!

Btw, how many mothers do we have here? Cody seems to be the only one?

Am I the only one?

WOW!

I never expected to be a mother either. I'm too busy. Fortunately, I got all boys.

I like camping and fishing and windsurfing and doing a lot of active things so boys are great. It would be a downer to have a girlie-girl that doesn't like to do any of those things.

My birth mother left me at the age of 5: 29 years ago... My dad got married when I was 16- she was barely 5 years older than I. Though I didn't appreciate a "mother" then- not having had one for 11 years... I appreciate her now. I usually try to come up with something nice- but since I did not this year, I made her a card and spent the day with her, my 2 little brothers (16 and 8) and her mother- church, lunch as such. Any gift I would have gotten her at this point would have looked contrived- so I didn't bother. Hope she didn't mind.

As for the birth mother- I found her 4 years ago, and we talk- mostly email. She's a decent person, but a mother- she is not.

My mother, for some reason, asked for the largest Maglite flashlight I could find. So, I got it for her. Took it to her after work and hung out for an hour or so.

Happy Mother's Day.

Oh, gosh, that brings back memories.

The Waltons.

Reminds me of Little House on the Prairie also. We used to watch one on Thursday night and the other on Sunday nights.

I was teeny then!

my mom and nana got phone calls, but my mom and dad were out camping. Me and the MIL got taken out to brunch at the Cheesecake factory, then later the husband and I had a friend babysit while we went to dinner and Hitchhikers. A pretty good day.

Oh, and I got a nap and a hand-colored mommy mug.

I've almost given up on giving my mom gifts, she is at a stage where she doesn't want clutter, and living far away I don't see what she actually could use.

BTW over here my French friends get a kick over the 'Mericans calling the grandmothers "Nana". Nana means "chick" in French.

However in Italian they say Nonna. Wonder where the whole Nana thing came from, since I never heard it used growing up.

How come there wasn't a Father's day post? I'm not a dad but they have their own day as well. Cody?

Father's Day is coming up, Randman.

I won't forget - trust me, I'm going to need some fellow MacNNers help for gift ideas.

Yeah, that's one of the best yet! I LOVE to hear my son gossip about things. He's not old enough for girlfriends and that sort of thing, but I love a really great one-on-one conversation that I don't usually get. That's a priceless gift, actually: A great conversation whether in person or over the telephone.

It's really the thought (and in this case, THE GIFT) that counts. Who cares about the day it comes? If my son or daughter or spouse were buying me a new iMac I'd be thrilled!

What a super gift.

But, I still think SuperChicken's gift was one of the best: A conversation.

Yeah but she deserved it. I haven't seen her in a while. I live far away from her and my job is very hectic.

I never had time for kids. Started taking care of my Mom after
my Dad died in '83.
So sorry for your loss invisibleX.
