Obviously its a mock up. But rather interesting.... nice step up from the GBA SP. bigger screen, foldable design (no scratches on the screen, with similar controls to the GC, with 2 analog-thing-a-ma-jiggers. (bear in mind GC discs are tiny.....The only 'if' is the battery life, if they can shrink the processor and optomize the disc reads, while improving battery capacities....they'll have a portable system id consider buying. Seeing as it is....'old' technology in a new package, they could easily market it at around $150-200.
Cool pic tough..... cheers.

You mean Gamecube technology will allow it to be less than $200? The PSP is a PS2 in a small package and it costs $250. Why should we think that a Gamecube (newer than a PS2) in a small package would cost less?
By looking at the mockup, it looks like it would be bigger and fatter than both PSP and DS. Hopefully Nintendo will figure out how to make it look like a wide GBA SP.

There is also the problem that disc-based technology dramatically reduces battery life. This is inherent to the format, because it requires the use of a motor, and those things use more power than any other part of the system except possibly the screen itself. This is the principal reason that the PSP has so many problems with its battery life. Using a slot-loading system only exacerbates the issue, because it requires a second motor to drive the slot-load mechanism.
Nice idea, but not technologically feasible at all.

I think powerPC G3s and derivitaves are produced at a much lower cost than other high end procesors. PowerPCs are used in embedded systems as well...simple, fast, efficient, cheap. Thats what the gamecube uses(PPC G3 deerivative called 'gekko' i think). Back when the GC came out, the G4 was brand spanking new, but IBM kept developing the G3 fabrication process.
Therefore....smaller dies, lower power consumption, cheaper since we are in the G5 era right now. Its perfectaly feasible in my opinion. whether it makes busness sence to relese something like that, or whether or not Nintendo will release something like that is debatable. but the technology is there....like you pointed out...the PSP is a good example.
When you buy a PSP, you get a movie player, a music player, a picture viewer, etc, and oh yeah....a gaming machine. Hopefully Nintendo will stick to what it does best and release an all gaming device just like it always has....and in doing so, will not push the prices higher (ala PSP) , forcing gaming-only consumers to pay for what they didnt want and cornering them into a busness model for a different sector of the entertainment industry, movies and music. For those who want it all, well the PSP is great....and the price seems reasonable. I think if you get all that for $250, a GC2go(assuming it will be only gaming) will have to be priced between $150-200 to compete.
Have you seen a GC disc ? thats a GC disc in the mok ups above.... and therefore it's roughly just a littler bigger than the SP imo.
Millenium, i agree...disk based portable systems suck. Heck thats one reason why i prefer my iPod to a portable CD player. skip protection is another thing....cool idea though if they do what others were not able to...
if you think about it... they have the technology and blueprints for the thing, the gamecube. modify it to reflect the smaller size. they have games, load times are already really low for gamecube games in general(most of them anyway). They'll just have to invest into research into things like, better skip protection, better battery technology, and minimizing the use of the disk. (kinda like the way Apple does it with the iPod.....basically buffers the next x songs into it's buffer and stops spinning the HD. but obviously this is a game, and its not as straightforward.....
oh well...we'll know in a week or so

Looks cool, but I'm running out of money for new game systems. I imagine many recent DS/PSP purchasers feel the same way. Why'd they spend so much time on the DS if they were going to spring this so soon? (Related question: when is this supposed to come out?)

I honestly hope it doesn't use a disk. cart's are way better for this application, maybe you could charge it with a handle in a pinch. besides I want a totally new system.

I honestly hope that the cart has more space than a cube disc, especially seeing as the ds cart has 2\3 of the cube's space,

Is not the Gamecube a little more than half the price of the PS2?

Do you mean capacity ? Last i heard NCG disc = 1.5GB, and DS = 128 MB (1 gigaBIT, not byte)
Wiskedjak, price dosent only reflect production costs, but also demand. thats why the Microsft had to sell it's console at close to 1/2 the cost to produce it, or no one would buy/want it.
