I heard that she had multiple wedding registries (you know, where you register your name in anticipation of an event and people go there or call up or go online and buy something for you in honor of the event) and that when contacted by some of the supposed guests about what will happen with the items now purchased for her, she told them that "the wedding is still on and there is no need for me to return the items."

So, it's just another way for her to steal from people.
