According to this article, Dell Corp.'s founder has made a big investment in the maker of Red Hat Linux, a popular competitor to MS Windows.
While this sounds like good news to me, what I cannot yet fathom is why Mr. Dell would want to undercut the OS that is preloaded on all those computers he sells?

Only thing I can think of is publicity.

Hmmmm. I can think of a few more efficient ways to gain publicity with nearly 100 million bucks to spend.

I think this is good for competition. Screw Windows. Is it me, or am I the only one seeing a positive side to this?

Yeah, it's you.
After all, I opened the thread saying it was good news, didn't I? That surely shows some recognition of the "positive side" of the story.

Dude,
Lighten up. I was referring to those who posted in reply to your thread.
What is up with that? You trounced on another person as well who mentioned publicity....

How was I supposed to know that? Sorry, but my ESP is a little rusty....

I think you mean "pounced," and I don't think I was treating his comment negatively or aggressively — I was merely expressing doubt that publicity was Dell's primary motivation.
You probably miscontrued my tone. Perhaps it is you who needs to chill, "Dude".

Right,
Based on this latest post. I'd say that you need to chill.
I meant trounced not pounced. Now you are telling people what words to use in their posts? Nice.

LOL. This is getting silly. Could we please stick to the topic? I'm perfectly happy in a world where I'm doing the chilling and you're still, um, un-chilled or whatever.
Please don't misunderstand me — I'm not the least bit annoyed or angry at anybody, just trying to have a conversation about something that interests me.

"Trounced" does not take the trailing preposition "on", "pounced" does — hence my inference that "pounced" is what you meant. That's something you learn if you don't rely solely on what dictionary.com tells you but also consider grammar and sentence structure.
Sorry if I was mistaken. It was an educated guess.

now you'll 'pounce' on me for not capitalizing my first letter in a sentence.
Back on topic:
i think that Red Hat's newfound wealth will add to the competition of operating systems and this can only be a good thing. OS X will improve, and Windows will probably fail miserably, even moreso now.
how was that?

You're not going to believe this, but ... *gasp* — I agree with you completely! Linux and Mac OS X/Darwin should live and be well. Death to Windows!

Sure. I used it in Scrabble™ just last week. Anyway, don't mind my pedantry. I'm a book editor and something of a fuddy-duddy, so try to take my crankiness in stride.

ME: Chill.
BUDSTER: No, you chill.
ME: Me? No way. You really need to chill.
BUDSTER: Like heck I do. If you don't chill right now, I'm gonna...
You get the idea.

Wow, I'm with Budster on this, dude, chill.
Why did you take my post as affront to you? Never mind, I'm staying out of this. I’ll do something more rewarding than to start an argument on a forum.

Oh, no you don't. Unless you believe in taking a senseless potshot and running, I recommend that you stand and defend yourself.

I'm not sure if Sarcasm was my intent, but I meant it in two ways. One, the arguments between you and Budster were interesting, I was wondering if things were going to escalate. Second, of the topic, I think Linux has great potential and I'm all about open source. Thus, any discussion, and or funding on it, is good.
Edit: I'll stay and argue. I just think it's silly, sometimes.

, you're right. And, for the record, I do believe in defending one's own stance. Taking potshots and running away is cowardly.

Hey! History. Just friggin, chill. I'm going to be e-mailing my new found friend selo whenever I have a grammatical question. I'm a graphic and web specialist so I really don't usually care about grammar.... until an 'editor' pulls my chain. I knew there was something about you! Pedantic. Oh yeah.
Bygons.
I have to say this thread is shaping up nicely, for the comical tit-for-tat we just went through, and the still continuing discussion on the main topic, Red Hat.
I hope your thread lasts much longer than the idiotic thread about the PSP.. I mean really, if they can have one go over 10 pages, Red Hat should easily go into 20 plus.

I take you and your word and apologize for assuming negative intent.
And yes, open source is an awesome movement. I am particularly proud of what Mozilla and the Open Source Applications Foundation do. Long live Camino (basically, Firefox for the Mac for lack of a better short description) and Chandler (a powerful open-source personal information manager and calendar sharing application).

Hey Budster, I'm chilling
I'm with you on the 'editor' stuff. I was just thinking that I need someone like Seloswitch to edit my writing. Since I too don't care about grammar when writing and after doing my own editing 342 pages... I'll rather rip my own eyes out than to do that again.
Seloswitch, what lovely name you have.
Seriously though, I am looking for an editor.
Edit: The turn around on this thread is fascinating. I want to a friend too.
