I'd like something which has playlists and allows me to jump around tracks like iTunes without all the garbage they keep adding with each new version. If I want a music video, I'll talk a walk to Teentown, Anytown.

Grow up and go download an older version then.

Audion, maybe? It's free now, and it's somewhat leaner than iTunes. I used it myself, until just recently.

I haven't liked audion since post-1.5.

1.5 was awesome, and my standard audio player... then 2 came out and was a piece of crap. Unstable, and just generally shoddy.

I think iTunes is the best audio player available. The library function, playlists, and general layout. Even sound-wise it's quite good.

I just don't want it to be able to play videos or do the dishes. Leave that up to QuickTime and iDishWash.

Music videos are bloat? It doesn't force videos on you, and the changes are so superficial, most people don't even notice they could watch a video (which you could do in the iTMS for ages, already). Big whoopdeedoo. Don't download videos from the iTMS, and you're set.

You know that in the Preferences, under the "Store" tab, you can turn access to the music store off, right?

I did that when I installed iTunes on my PC laptop at work -- I turned off everything that could possibly access the 'net, so that I don't leave suspicious packets lying about the network....

It's really rather simple; just don't use the features you don't like. Is this really that hard to comprehend?

Not so hard to comprehend as the concept of 'bloat' that some of you are missing.

iTunes has yet to feel slower or more unresponsive... what are you caring that you've lost five more megs of HD space over the last year? I mean really the product I think now is faster than ever so who cares?

bloat would mean feature overkill that disrupts the usefulness of the gui, adds unnecessary confusion, and is a feature that most people see as entirely unrelated.

I'm just contending that the iTMS letting you download a music video (with the choice to see the video or just listen to it) has not been implemented as bloat.

I would expect, given the newest subscription-service-of-the-week appearing on the scene (i.e. - even Yahoo is now getting in on it), that Apple is going to add features to stay on top. Not that each new feature is great or even useful, but it's all about mindshare amongst the broad consumer base they are currently profiting from.
