The battery? What did he plug it into? Post the article for non-members. (Second nomination)

Don't put your iPod through the washing machine. And if for some reason you do, don't try to fix it with a screwdriver.

That's the advice of fire investigators probing a small explosion that burned a hole in the bed of a Melbourne teenager who tried to perform emergency surgery on his ailing mp3 player.

The boy was treated by paramedics at his Bayswater home for breathing difficulties after ingesting fumes emitted by the device as he pulled it apart in his suburban bedroom about 7.30pm on Wednesday.

Country Fire Authority spokesman Peter Philp said the leaky iPod had been taken away for testing by CFA investigators.

"His mother did the washing and the iPod was in the clothing so it went through the washing machine," Mr Philp said.

"It wasn't working, the young fella tried to undo it or fix it with a screwdriver and at that stage there was an explosion, or more of a pop.

"It was more smoke than fire but it did leave a burn mark on the cover."

Metropolitan Ambulance spokeswoman Lirije Memishi said it was unclear what the teenager had ingested.

"We treated him on the scene for minor breathing difficulties but he was fine and then we scooted out and helped save the rest of Melbourne," she said.

Lithium-Ion batteries have always required babying. I guess the wash water shorted out the battery contacts, causing it to overheat.

I don't mean being picky but the boy was "incommodated", not injured.

Wow. Just wow.

What kind of idiot expect any kind of mechanical thingamabobbledegoob like an iPod to work after having been through a washing machine?!? I accidentally put a Lego block in the washing machine once (don't know what it was doing in my pocket to begin with, but that's beside the point), and even that was completely warped and twisted and looked nothing like a Lego block when it was done. An iPod will probably at least have more or less the same shape as it used to, but sticking a screw driver into it is not the most brilliant of things to do even without the washing machine aspect of the story.

What an idiot.

Now, that is appropriate use for a dishwashing machine.

Here is one more (among many, I am certain):

He didn't expect it to work. He expected to be able to repair it. The iPod doesn't have a warning that it mustn't be opened after being machine-washed, so it was no unreasonable thing to do.

What if I accidentally microwave my iPod - can I open it then to repair it?

Exactly how much clearer should that have been phrased?

It should have been labelled specifically for him, with address and all:

“To the attention of Mr. [insert name], [insert address], Australia:

If you accidentally put your iPod in the washing machine, and it is washed therein, do not try to open and/or repair the iPod afterwards, especially not through the use of a screw driver (or multiple screw drivers), and most particularly not while lying in bed. Doing so will cause the battery in your iPod to make a strange 'pop' sound, burn a whole in your sheets, and cause you to inhale odd fumes, which will necessitate temporary hospitalisation for you.”

That's what Apple is refering to when they say: "Personalize your iPod" - gotcha.

Actually the iPod can survive being washed. The problem was that this kid encountered the patent-pending iPod anti-tamper device. A feature requested by Steve to prevent Bill Gates and other such heinous technology-stealing types from gaining insight into the inner workings of the iPod.

The anti-tamper device will initially let out a shrill screaming sound to warn the would-be technology tamperer, in this case it seems the kid mistook this sound for some Celine Dion that he had stored on the iPod. 10 seconds after this warning, and if the tampering continues, the device will explode - rendering the secretive internal workings completely destroyed, and thus the secret of the iPod is maintained.

Haha, good one I'd love to see the look on Bill Gates' face after the explosion

I just went for a 4 hour mountain hike in 20m/s wind and really, really, pouring rain - and forgot that my iPod was in my non-waterproof backpack. Needless to say, it got soaked and now it's completely dead. Since I remembered the above mentioned news article, I'm almost afraid to approach it.

What do you think - is it dead forever? Is it going to explode tonight and burn down my apartment?

Yes, and no matter how many tears you shed, it wont make it better.

Actually, I'd just let it dry and give it another try then. If not, call Apple and have it serviced. If it's out of warranty or you don't have AppleCare, it might be a bit pricey to have it fixed, though.

Thanks for the advice ELT. It's completely dead and I don't think it will pay off to have it fixed.

So, I'm off to the Apple Store now to get an iPod Photo .
