Weren't we supposed to see a $600 model by now? I read that last year and haven't seen anything.

The only 2 prosumer HD Mini DV camcorders I know of are Sony's HDR-FX1 which is about $3,200 and JVC's GR-HD1 which is about $2,000.

Yeah, this may be the year of HD, but i have a feeling not many of us are going to see it before the year is up. (or, if we do, we might need that free iMovie HD after spending $3,000 on a camera)

I think it is too soon to declare this the year of HD. Maybe 2006/2007.

How so? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just curious what you've heard. It's way (way, way) out of my price range, but i've played with one and seen them used a couple of times and they seemed nice enough. Although, i guess it doesn't really matter how good it is, because at this point it's the only 1080i HDV cam you can buy for any reasonable (to a prosumer) amount of money.

Steve Jobs has been a little premature announding things.
He pronouced OS9 dead about a year early.
He pronounced CRTs dead, yet still sells eMacs.
Year of HD? Other than iMovie HD and HD Keynote, what else is there?

i don't think Steve meant just apps and hardware for computer users. in more a more broad sense, HD content and consumer devices to display have and will continue to increase for 2005, making i the HD boom that goes with a newer* technology.
* for the general public. early adapters like me, from 1998, have been waiting for more HD content, it is finally coming.

The real question is, is there affordable HD anything yet?

I got a Zenith 27" HDTV (great TV, by the way) for around $450, and that was almost a year ago, so it's definitely moving towards "affordable by most" rather than "niche market". Plus most cable providers offer HD channels for free if you rent the box, which should help its adoption.

I think Steve was right on when he said its the year of HD. HD TV is all anyone wants anymore for TVs, go into any electronic stores, and look at the TVs. DVD content in HD will really help move things along, and as far as I can tell, they're making progress there too. By Christmas, all you're going to hear is HD this HD that.

I've had an HDTV for 3 years.
iMovie HD is cheap.
My HD PVR costs $15 per month more than a standard cable box.
All current iMacs can playback 720p HD, including HD DVD wedding videos made with DVD Studio Pro.
So, I'd have to say yes.

from engadget:
-supports HDV and records in 1080i
-2.7-inch hybrid touchscreen LCD
-SteadyShot image stabilization
-90 minutes battery life
-10X optical and 120X digital zoom
-PictBridge capability
-ability to snag 2.8 megapixel stills directly onto Memory Stick Pro Duo cards.
-only HD camcorder that lets you take a 1 megapixel still shot while concurrently filming HD video.
Supposedly available July 7th for ~$1700 USD, which would also make it the cheapest HDV cam, no? i think the JVC is still in the $2000 range.
