Malcolm Glazer, owner of the 2003 Superbowl champion Tampa Bay Bucaneers, has increased his ownership of the world's most popular football team: UK's Manchester United.
What could this mean for the sports scene in the US? As a businessman, Glazer is sure to try to stimulate and exploit the dormant US football market, but how?

What will it mean for football as a sport? Hopefully it will not be modified so that it caters to US sport taste. Years ago, it was rumored that goals would be made wider so that scores are in the 10+ each team.

Manchester United is doomed I guess.
No thanks to Glazer who has to borrow money to buy the club. He ain't no Roman Abramovich.

kinda off topic. i don't like how in US soccer for a free kick they take it ice hockey style. from the half way line they dribble it to an oncoming goalie.
i much prefer the penalty kick from the dot in the box.

can you say that again mdc?
So for a penalty, the team lines up on the halfway line and run at the goalie trying to knock it in?
Thats ridiculous!! What bloody rot!
Oh yeah, I hope Glazer shafts Manure back down to 3rd division and bankrupts them! Go the blues!

Man U already has a marketing agreement, but it's with another Tampa resident, George Steinbrenner. The NY Yankees and Man U have a long-term deal together.
As far as the NFL, Glazer is very low-key. I wouldn't expect Man U to see many changes.

I don't care about football - only international matches.
If you place your club on the Stock Exchange - you run the risk of someone buying the whole thing.
Pity he's going to load it up with debt.

Really? How do you know that Glazer will load Man U in debt? I haven't read anything like it in my local newspaper.

Hoping it goes the way of my team [Leeds United] ie nearly bankrupts them and sends them down a division, then we buy Alan Smith back for peanuts and be back in the Permiership where we belong [rant rant!!]

After he reached 75% ownership he can/could transfer the loans he took to buy the club onto the club itself. And by doing that letting the club itself pay back the loan for him. ManUtd has been very well run and stayed out of debt so by doing what he's doing he forcing ManUtd to pay about 25m in loans every year. That's about the same money as they spend on players each year.
But, I so hope they get what they deserve. Back into the lower leagues with you ManUtd while some of us try to find ways of going to Istanbul for the 25th this month!

one-on-one.
the player takes the ball to the 35 yard mark, and dribbles towards the goalie. the goalie is allowed to move as soon as the player touches the ball for the first time. the player dribbles towards the goal and shoots whenever he feels is best.
i was watching some game on tv and it went to penalty shots and i could not believe this when i saw it.

This was tried as an experiment in the first season of MLS, but was almost universally hated. Fortunately, the league came to their senses, and it has not been this way in the US since 1999 or so.

Why not? It is one of 'our' (European) sports that have made it to America.
(You are aware that when Europeans say football, they're talking about what you call soccer, I assume?)
