->why does apple insist on not choosing intel or AMD chips for their computers? OK...Forget Intel. AMD rocks (the Germans are playing their cards right).
->I find it confusing to understand why Apple avoids the common processors in the market.
->I can dig this info out from google, but I wanna hear from you guys (the mac experts).
->any one wanna volunteer to enlighten me?

note: I am not stating that the G5 is worse than intel and AMD chips.

The Pentium 4 is pin compatible with a G5. All you have to do is pull the G5 out and plug in a Pentium 4. Then just recompile everything. I thought everyone knew this already.

Apple uses a completely different architecture. Think of it as a series vs parallel circuit. They use a reduced instruction set compared to a complete instruction set. It is based on the powerpc from ibm. Underneath the icons they are completely different.

You might as well ask why Apple not simply abandon the Mac OS and make Windows PCs.

No, seriously. You are asking Apple to choose what is cheap over what is good when you ask them to use x86 chips. The x86 architecture is common, just as Windows is, and because of this Intel (like Microsoft) has managed to pull up some relatively meaningless numbers to make itself look better. But when you actually look at the details, the x86 architecture is crap. I don't just mean "not as good as PPC"; I mean complete and total junk. The reasons for this are largely technical in nature, but they make it a real problem to optimize software to any real degree. The architecture is common enough that people invest huge amounts of time, money, and resources to do it anyway, because it brings in cash, but the fact is that even the venerable 680x0 architecture was better in its time.

Apple uses standards from the PC world, when it does not have something better to offer, but it is not afraid to use better things when they come up. PCI and AGP are better than NuBus, USB is better than old-style serial connections, HyperTransport is better than the older bus architectures, DDR is better than RAMBUS, and so forth. The one major concession to cheaper-over-better that they've made over the years was to go switch to using ATA hard drives instead of SCSI, and I still mourn the loss there. I buy Apple computers because they make the best hardware out there for the price, in terms of hardware and in terms of elegance, and this is a large part of why things Just Work.
