Nice one! And there were actually teams from other countries as well unlike most American world championships!
Well done

Yeah, I'm still alive, thank goodness. I've been recovering big-time - like sleeping 14 hours per night the last few nights. Damn it feels good.
The Australian teams are getting really good. University of Wollongong won the competition in 2003. We crashed our car right before the event so didn't have it together well and had some reliability problems. University of Western Australia has won the design competition (one of the events) for two years in a row and finished 2nd place this year. They have a very nice car and I suspect they'll be giving future Cornell teams a serious run for their money.
Speaking of the design competition, basically the technical experts on the team get interviewed by automotive and racing professionals to see how well we understand our car and how well we can justify our design decisions. This is a picture of me talking with two engine judges in the first round of the event:

On my right is Ken Sperry, a well-known powertrain engineer from GM. On my left is an engineer from Cosworth, a big British high-performance engine company. That notebook in my hands is one I prepared ahead of time with test results, calculations, etc to defend myself. The chassis guy and I advanced to the final round and ended up getting 4th place in design, out of 140 teams. What a thrill.

Yes, a vehicle was built - a race car.

Well done. I was involved in the UK with Formula Student, so I know the kind of effort involved. It's a great thing to do. But it makes normal engineering life really suck arse after uni.

A few students and a faculty advisory died on the way to the competition this year in a bad multi vehicle accident; I think they were coming from Montana or Minnesota.
Hmm, this article says 3 students and the faculty advisor was fine. My bad.

I wish I had known the event was happening ahead of time. I would have driven down and checked it out as I live only about 40 minutes from there.
We coulda had a beer.
