Now before I start, don't get me wrong. Apple includes so much in the basic OS that is just outstanding, all these apps, iLife, etc.
However, to use all of their software really becomes a pain and expensive.

After buying tiger (an OS update that I am more than willing to pay for) I got quicktime 7 which disabled my quicktime 6 pro that I bought. Now I have to purchase that. Also, it came with a free trial of iWork that is almost up. I am going to buy it because I think they are much better apps then word/powerpoint, but I think they should be included in the OS.
If they aren't to be included with the purchase of a new computer/tiger, I think that .mac should include quicktime pro and iWork at the very minimum. Buying all these extra's really adds up. I bought .mac about a year and a half ago and use that as my primary email, so now I am almost forced to renew it each year even though I get very little use out of the other features. I would feel alot better if I were paying for this and not having to buy quicktime and iWork. I'm sure there are other things I've bought along those lines that are just slipping my mind right now. Apple just needs to get their **** together in that respect and not make it such a pain to use all of their software.

You don't have to buy any of those, you know.

Randman, I know this but I mean come on, you think it is more essential for Apple to provide new computer owners with lets say garageband or other apps like that instead of a word proccessor? And don't say appleworks, we all know that's trash.

And looking back, now I regret buying .mac. I thought I would use the features a lot more than I have but like I said I have to keep renewing it for the email account.

And quicktime pro? I know there have been countless threads on that but it should all be included in regular quicktime, or at least like I said bundled with .mac or Tiger or something.

You can downgrade to Quicktime 6. I do agree though if you buy tiger it should come with a free pro copy. I think Apple did that once with OS 8.5 or something.

Text Edit is pretty capable these days, and it ships free with all macs. Gotta agree about Aplle Works-- it is teh suck. They'll probably start bundling iWork once they've got some sort of spreadsheet/database app to complete the trio.

Agreed on the QT Pro scenario. I've lost count on how many times I had to upgrade QT.

I understand what you are saying, but at the same time, it's not like they force you to do anything. Many people are still zipping along with 10.3 without any issues... and even Apple has said that the major OS updates will be further apart from now on.

Pages is NOT a replacement for Word.
Pages is a hybrid application. Think of it as a VERY dumbed down version of InDesign/Quark with 20% of Word thrown in. I do wish they would offer it with every new Mac. I don't see Pages taking off without giving it away to new computer users. Again, that's a choice Apple made. I also feel that Keynote/Pages should sell for around $40. That being said, Keynote can make some jaw dropping presentations.

Oh well...

Unless you upgraded to 7.0.1

Installation of QuickTime 7 will disable the QuickTime Pro functionality in prior versions of QuickTime, such as QuickTime 5 or QuickTime 6. If you proceed with this installation, you must purchase a new QuickTime 7 Pro key to regain QuickTime Pro functionality. After installation, visit www.apple.com/quicktime to purchase a QuickTime 7 Pro key.

Seems that Apple is practically giving it away because it is selling like ****.

I don't understand why they don't offer a VERY skimpy Apple branded FileMaker spinoff. Make iDB [new apple DB program] to iMovie what FileMaker is to Final Cut Pro. And the spreadsheet thing should be simple as well. It doesn't need to compete with Excel... just offer the core functions.

Yup. And when you buy a Mac, I think they should give you the next lower model free. And every piece of software in the Apple Store closest to you should also be given to you free. I think they should also give you a digital camera, digital camcorder, an electric guitar, and a microphone free with every new Mac. Oh -- and a couple thousand shares of stock.

Yeah -- Apple really has its heads up its butt because it's not giving away all the things we want it to, the pieces of crap.

I think they marketed iWork like crap... IMHO, they added >> ONE << application and are trying to pass it off like a office package. I think $40-$50 would have made it a "WOW" application... especially if they would have included it (serialized) with every new Mac and have deals where if you buy anything from Apple between X and Y you get Pages for free!

It's a chicken and egg problem regarding Pages.

I don't think the original poster was that rediculous. He would simply be more satisfied if they bundled more applications with purchases.

Perhaps he would be more satisfied if they offered "upgrades" like "Buy .mac and get iWork for $30"

Once again, no need to be a smartass. People have come up with very good points so far on this thread, I don't see how it makes people like you happy to just be completely sarcastic and not even mention anything useful.

This is true. The only good thing they did was include the trial version in Tiger, but that still doesn't help too much. Before I got Tiger, I knew all about iWork and was eager to try it but decided not too since I already had Office. However, once I installed the trial version and have been using it a lot over the past month, I am most likely going to buy the full version because I think pages and keynote are a lot better than word and powerpoint respectively.

I do think Apple does too much nickel-and-diming of people but what can I say, I'm Apple's bitch.

I think iWork should have just been offered as iLife '05. And that .mac is given for 1 year with the purchase of a Mac (ok, maybe not the mini and other lower-priced models).

Keynote owns PowerPoint. Pages is beaten on one front by InDesign and the other by Word, so I didn't find much use for it.

Cool part is; I owned none of those apps mentioned (ie, PowerPoint,
InDesign, Word, or Quark) so it really filled in some gaps for me.
And so far, I like Pages alot better than Appleworks.
For some of us non power users it does fill a gap.
Now, to learn how to use them.

SWF, SWF, SWF, I wasn't comparing price to price. But usage to usage.

I see you didn't chastise Randman for comparing it to InDesign or Office.

You are correct. I was thinking 6.5

The last version of Quark I used was 4.1. Before switching to Indesign.

There are a few things that Apple should do. For 1 I think they should offer 1-2 gigs of space for .Mac. Google and Yahoo are doing this for Free. Second they should like a few people have said included Pages and Keynote in the iLife suite. or at least just somehow made some changes to the Spreadsheet app from AppleWorks and included it with iWork.

i'm not too angry about paying the 30 bucks for QT7. How long has QT been out? How often do they do a major revision like going from 5-6 or from 6-7. Hasn't it been 3 years or more since the upgrade to QT6?

I find room for Pages, Word AND InDesign CS2 on my mac and find uses for them all.

But however, Keynote 2 totally OWNS PowerPoint in every conceivable way.

When are we going to see an Ultimage Fighting cage match between Zimphire and Severed Hand of Skywalker? Really, it's long overdue.

Either that, or give them a bloody reality show like the Simple Life. Then they can bicker and slap each other and they can have millions and millions of fanboys all over the world.

Hell, I'd watch it.
