At one time I thought it might be nice to use a cellphone on a plane. It seems to be getting closer to happening, though the FBI doesn't like it. The more I think about it, the more annoying it will probably be.

There's a lot of background noise already on planes. Can you imagine how loud people are going to be speaking when they're talking on their phones? I'll never get any sleep on a plane now. Sales of noise-cancelling earphones are going to go through the roof.

What do you think?

No. Air marshals should be ordered to shoot anyone who even touches their cell phone until they get into the gate. Flying domestic is bad enough these days. Imagine sitting next to three people all shouting into their phones. My god.

People taking on their cell and driving are bad enough. Flying in the cheap seats with a mom and newborn in front of me and the person next to me talking on a cell phone would be enough for me to open the emergency exit.

I always keep my cell ringer off, but I think it's absurd so I never turn my cell phone off when they demand it. That said, I'm in favor of keeping the ban because I can't stand listening to people jabbering on their phones. (sorry for risking your lives!)

Man, its already bad enough that folks are whipping out their phones as soon as the wheel hits the ground so they can tell their loved one's "I've just landed".

When did that piece of info become so important? And as if the folks picking them up (which should be the only ones that would matter to) can't see the "LANDED" status on the monitors.

Sometimes I get the feeling that folks are showing off the fact that they can make a call from the plane... but then I realize, to who? The 2 people on the plane without cell phones?

I vote NO.

I think the real questions is "do we really NEED to use cell phones on planes?". I say keep the ban. Sitting near one of those mobile morons talking loudly into their cell phone on a bus, train, or in a restaurant etc is bad enough. A multi hour flight with one would be hell.

I voted yes for one reason: I want to be able to text message, do email, etc. on my phone on the plane. I use a Treo, and would love to be able to use the data side of things more than actually talk on the phone.

As far as talking goes, I'd be cool with continuing the ban and I'd be cool with lifting it. I've always got headphones in my ears either from the iPod or from watching a movie that I wouldn't really notice people yacking away. I can appreciate though that some people would be super annoyed and it's ok with me if they don't want to let people talk.

I'd rather they offer WiFi so I can do all those things except for SMS from my PowerBook.

Oh come on Rand, that was clearly a joke. Hence the

Not everything I post is hateful or vindictive.

As a matter of fact, most of my posts aren't.

I know. Same here. Just don't always use emoticons.

Besides, I've wanted to use that fan boy line for the longest time.

What really annoys me is how early on they insist that you shut off all electronic devices. My iPod does not interfere with your ability to land the plane, sir. Then again, I always leave it on until the last minute and no flight attendant has ever said anything to me.

I can see it now.

43 people, all speaking too loudly: I'm on the plane. I'm on the plane. No, still on the plane. We've landed but I'm still on the plane. Yes, on the plane. I dunno. Yeah? Yeah. I dunno. Still on the plane? Ok? Yeah? Yeah. Bye."

Must be a plan hatched by Amtrak.

The question should be "Do I want to hear other people talk on their mobiles on a plane"? Because the answer to this is a resounding no.

However, turn it around, and ask "If you could make mobile calls from a plane, would you"? I'm willing to bet that most people would say "yes".

Air marshals should shoot you for being mean

I think hypothetically that YES you should be able to receive calls from a plane, and yes that if required, you should be able to make calls from a plane as well, the problem comes with passing by cellphone towers quite quickly, and that causing a problem as well, so no it probably still isn't likely to be allowed in the first place.

Cellphones are wonderful devices when not abused, shouting into a phone is considered rude, as is many other things. If phones were allowed on the plane, like any normal conversation with anyone else on the plane, shouting into the phone and talking obscenely should be treated as such and frowned upon (if not a "Sir please be quiet" offense!)

Tell ya the truth, people shouting at their phones doesn't annoy me the slightest bit, was does are the "HELLO? HELLO! HELLO!" people who keep saying hello to a phone that's already on the damn hook. The other annoyance that comes to mind are direct-connect phones.. loud, rude, annoying, and typically used by "WHERE YOU AT?!" morons.
