I'm going on vacation to Japan this August and I want to upgrade my digicam, something with good optical zoom. Right now I'm leaning towards the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20K, it has 12x optical zoom with image stabilizer. What do you think? I'd like to see actual full res pics if anyone has this camera. I'd also consider a true SLR but that might be overkill for me.

Thanks.

Olympus C-765. It has a 10x optical. I'm sure you know this, but optical zoom is all that matters -- don't get sucked into the 899x total zoom (2x optical, 987x digital) trick.

My understanding is that the Pentax *ist DL (an entry level version of the *ist D and *ist DS) is coming out in July for under $800, and you'll be able to use it with all the Pentax K Mount lenses from the last 25 years. Decent Pentax lenses are pretty easy to find used, and aren't as pricey as Canon or Nikon. I actually want to get that one as a trade up from my Canon digital point and shoot.

A similar camera to the Lumix DMC is the Canon S1 IS (and now the S2 1S). They both have image stabilization and really good reviews, but I tried the S1 out for an afternoon and I was really unimpressed. The pictures using the auto settings looked fine in the LCD, but were actually a bit blurry when i had them open in iPhoto.

The first stops for anyone considering any digital camera should be www.dpreview.com and www.steves-digicams.com

Second that tooki.

I'm fond of the Lumix myself for a P&S, and love the Nikon D70. (D70 S coming)

Thanks, I'll check out those sites and cameras mentioned.

I currently have a 6MP Fuji F700. The pics turn out great, but again I need something with better zoom. Image stabilization is nice to have too, probably a necessity with extremely high zoom. If I choose the Lumix which is a 5MP, I'd be concerned that I'm losing 1MP. But I'm guessing the nicer lens would more than make up for it by picking up finer details.

Canon makes the best cameras, hands down. dpreview.com is your best source. Remember that MegaPixel doesn't mean anything if the rest of the camera is bad.

Take into consideration the size of the camera. I went with a smaller one for travel over bigger and more features.

Yes, I'm very impressed with dpreview.com, so much good in-depth information there.

As for my comment about 6MP vs 5MP above, my Fuji F700 is actually 3MP with a 6MP interpolated mode. It's no match against a true 5MP camera. I guess I didn't pay much attention when I bought the Fuji.
