This record will never be beaten. You can't land any higher than Everest.

That's my understanding. Otherwise they would've done it a long time ago.

But it would be good to get responses from some of the MacNN members who are pilots.

Thin air, cold temperatures, wind, thermals. All in all, a pretty impressive feat. Glad they didn't blow any hikers off the mountain.
I read that they had to remain on the crest for 3 minutes for the record to stand but once they did it, they were able to repeat it a few times afterward.

Helicopters have a terrible time hovering at high altitude. The rotor generates less lift in a hover than in forward flight because the downwash interacts with the rotor. Chances are this helicopter didn't have to hover to land because there was probably quite a bit of wind up there. So the helicopter "thought" it was in forward flight. Still, this is quite amazing.

It was an Eurocopter by the way. The same corporation builds the Airbus A380.

That's very impressive. Maybe it'll cut down on deaths that occur on the way up. I'd rather pay the cash for the ride than risk my ass.

Perhaps I'm the only one that's a little sad... there was something about "only" being able to get to there by hiking.

By the way, I heard you delivered incomplete fuselages to Toulouse which will delay A380 delivery by half a year. What's up with that?

WRONG!! Since Mount Everest is GROWING at a rate of ~2in. per year, come back in a year and you'd have topped the record. I remember as a kid that Mt. Everest was 29,028ft. I recently found out it is now ~29,035ft.

I can hear the pilot now or imagine...: (Possibilities)

1. (His wife) I told you to ask for directions!
2. (Pilot to wife) Why not get out and have a look around, I'll be right here, promise."
3. As he was looking in the Helo's glove box for a lighter, he didn't notice he was climbing higher and higher... "I wonder why this cig won't light?"... dang...
4. Hey, I think I'll break a world's record and land on top of Mt. Everest

Yeah, just to find out that some aliens already built an escalator from Mars to the backside of the moon...

We'd see it. The dark side of the moon is the side we see. It's the other side that faces the sun.

Did you see that helicopter land on Mt. Everest ?
So what makes you sure you'd see the escalator ?

Buzzkill.

So, I have to scrap my plans to build the orbiting station on the dark side and prepare to insulate it for the bright side... damn. That's going to cost extra.

Are you kidding? the crest of Mount Everest is the highest point on the Earth. For a mountain to dwarf Everest, it would need to be taller. There is no taller. And by dwarf, it would have to be at least twice the height, almost 60,000 feet tall. Now there are higher mountains in the solar system, Mons Olympia on Mars for one, that are taller. But none of the Earth. K2 is second.

Now, if you said the big island of Hawaii had the most mass, counting its depth in the ocean, you could make a claim, though there's some that would argue with that (depends on how you count Australia, for one).
But highest means elevation and Hawaii ain't it.

Elevation is relative.

Ok so now who wants to set the record for the lowest a helicopter has been flown.

My girlfriend had a drill attached to a helicopter, and she flew down into the earth's core. She didn't live to talk about it. But I did have a girlfriend. I swear.

Sounds like an early concept for the movie 'The CORE.' Which was bad. Very bad.

One surely can't beat my very real girlfriend's unverified record by flying a helicopter into the ocean! The earth's core is so much lower!
