OK I've been mulling things over... and, I gota say while I'm still a wee bit pissed off that we had to walk in and find Apple in bed with Intel... and find out that they'd been screwing around with the bastards behind our back for years... I'm starting to consider what might be nice with the move.

First of all did you notice not ONCE did Steve say x86? Granted we know initially we'll start off on x86. Is that where it's staying. Perhaps Intel might add on instructions that Microsoft wouldn't buy into but Apple would... think a P4 plus altivec (don't know if it's doable). Though I think that would put them back in the same problems as they are now, so odds are we'll be getting the same Pentiums, Pentium Ms... and shudder hopefully not Celerons that everyone else is.

Second, speculation for the early future. Product lines what gets what?
I'm HOPING upon hope that the Mac mini does NOT get a Celeron, worst case scenario low power P4, more likely Pentium M.
eMac, I'm guessing might get phased out, if not I would hope a Pentium 4/D whatever. Though perhaps we might see a Celeron in it... I do think though that'd cheapen the eMac even more than it already is.
iMac, I'm betting on a standard desktop chip like a P4 and whatever it's successors might be. Though I've heard grumbling of Pentium M tech moving into the desktop chips so...
PowerMac... I'm not sure. I think we could either see the line split into straight Desktop pentiums, and Xeons. Or all Xeons... or... I dono exactly where we're going with this. Ideally I would prefer an AMD chip in my future PowerMac... by the way does anyone else feel really dirty and strange talking like this?

iBook, and PowerBook and perhaps another Book, I'm guessing will all be Pentium Ms. I wonder if Apple would really want to call it Centrino. But at the same time I don't know if Steve will be willing to give up on AirPort... or if they'll try and merge the branding or what?

I imagine we will see the power saving chipsets in the PowerBooks though, or some derivatives.

AirPort was actually a fairly big concerns for me.. don't know why. I could see AirPort being abandoned in favour of the centrino tech for standard's sake. not to mention Apple could I imagine still do the wiring for the antennae in the display like they like to.

Other things... Xscale, chips... are they anything like x86? Could this possibly lead to an Intel Powered Handheld? Granted Apple didn't do this with available PPC chips so...

Xserves: I imagine this might be the last line to move over. Since The G5 is a server chip. I could kind of see Apple keeping the G5 in the Xserve, or running Dual lines even boxes with PPC and x86 processors in them if the market could use em.

Lastly... what are the chances of those freakishly evil Intel inside stickers!? I don't know if I could hold back my gagging long enough to buy a Mac with one of those... I imagine Apple is going to do their best to keep away from those bloody stickers but... I'm scared... genuinely... scared

Anything you guys wanna add that will keep you up tonight?

No stickers. The intel logo is seamlessly integrated into the design by Ive.

Airport is a marketing name for 802.11b. Airport Extreme is a marketing name for 802.11g. Nothing more.

Centrino is a marketing name for an Intel mobile CPU + Intel Chipset + Intel 802.11b/g wireless card. Nothing more.

Thus, a Powerbook is likely to still have "Airport Extreme Wireless" with an intel chip, and the antennas will be in the screen. In fact, putting the antennas in the screen is common practice on nearly every PC laptop these days as well. The move to Intel won't change wireless, beyond Apple having a chance at being the first laptop vendor with support for WiMAX, since Intel is doing a lot with that technology.

Regarding Xscale chips. Those are not x86. They are a variant of ARM, specificially StrongARM. This was one of many RISC based chips born of the 90s that Intel now owns the rights to. It's been very popular in the embedded market. The handheld arena moved specificially to it from a mismash of several CPU types when Microsoft put their foot down in late 2000. Palm has also moved to them. The Gameboy line and the DS use ARM variants, but not the StrongARM specificially. In any case, I don't see Apple using these for anything.

Say goodbye to the classic environment! OS9 will be 5 years old in 2006 and after 5 years, that's when Apple tends to drop support. OSX on Intel will likely be Classic-Free (I betcha).

There will be no Intel logo. There never was an IBM logo or a Motorola logo, why would there be an Intel logo? The only logo will be an Apple logo.

A nightmare that I don't think we will have to face.

Hopefully since Apple is not running many TV adds anyway for the Mac we will never have to hear the Intel dings... but... I think I might cry if I hear this in an add.

But OK so which one do you think is gona win out PowerBook with Intel centrino mobile technology? Or PowerBook with AirPort Extreme? Especially since Apple is already on the 802.11g bandwagon and last I saw (though I haven't paid attention recently) most Centrinos were still 802.11b?

The Intel chime is only played if and when Intel pays for part of the commercial.

Actually, before the Blue and White G3, all Macs had a PowerPC logo on the front.

But this kinda then proves that Apple realizes made by so and so logos aren't great on their products. I wouldn't mind so much on the box... but I think a lot of Mac heads would be pissed off if Intel inside logos were all over their comps...

It's already been established that Macs won't have to have the Intel stickers. Companies do that to get a little kickback from Intel but I can't see Apple doing that.
