Kissing, we have all had the experience of locking lips with another person, right? At least I hope you have had the experience. It's a lovely experience that is so addictive that we must repeat it over and over again. So, exciting that it sometimes leads to a stronger attachment than sex can provide. Why is this?
Kissing in the literal sense is kinda weird when you think about it. You are basically licking the inside of someone else's mouth. Doesn't that seem a bit strange? We live in an age of technology where we often forget tradition and shun practices that we consider barbaric. Yet, we still lick the inside of each other's mouths. Kissing survives. It's human. It's human in one of its most purest forms.
Or maybe, it just feels good.
Thoughts?

Kissing is dirty and can spread so many disease. It's almost as bad as having unprotected sex.
People catching Meningitis from kissing and dying from it in matter of days.

Perhaps it's genetically encoded because it seems to be cross-cultural and spread all over the world.

Touch is one of the most physically meaningful ways we humans have to convey love (and even hate!). It seems it is not even limited to humans- Dogs love to be petted. And it doesn't have to be sexual- people love to be hugged, and a handshake can symbolize friendship.
Kissing is obviously quite an intimate form of touching- and it is pleasurable and sexual in nature. Of course, you could engage in a kiss purely for the physical pleasure of it, but it can be a meaningful loving act to two people truly in love, just as sex can be.
Yes, it is strange. But so many things we do, and don't even notice most of the time, are so.

Have we really always kissed? Has this been studied? I mean maybe there are cultures out there who don't do it- wouldn't even think about it.
And besides, there's two kinds of kissing - the non sexual peck and the open mouthed kiss. Are they two seperate things or really just two forms of the same thing?
Funny thing is: when you kiss someone that way, you are experiencing them through all of the 5 senses. Touch, sight, smell, hearing, and of course taste.

Perhaps there are. It would be interesting to see if is truly prevalent in all cultures, though it seems to be prevalent in all of the "known" world at least.

They are both signs of affection, but one is sexual, where another is not. The difference between a friendly hug or pat and a sexual caress, I suppose.

Very true. Interesting observation.
