such a sad life it must have. An outsider, even in the Apple gang. I bet all the PPC computers made fun of it at WWDC. Little do they know, it is an ugly duckling. One day, it will be king.

For those of you still upset about the G5 having two drive bays, without 5lbs of aluminum you just might get more.

$999 is quite a lot for an intel motherboard, unless the case is also quite expensive.

The price is for the dev kit, which is probably priced as much to keep the riff-raff out.

Actually, the $999 is just a rental fee. It must be returned in a year, or else !

Nah, even if somebody has the $999, they must be a "qualified" developer. So, even some moron with $999 to blow, cannot get that box.

looks very plain and utilitarian, like you would expect from a development box.
Expect the first publicly available intel based mac towers (will they be called PowerMacs? I vote we return to - Macintosh) to be more, uh, sexy.

Apple developer boxes usually come in non-descript regular cases.

Look at the length of the memory slot, in comparison with the cleary visible heatsink fan.
Now, look at this:

That heatsink is clearly an intel standard heatsink. The processor in these dev kits looks like its either a P4 560J or a P4 660.

The intel is a Micro-ATX board which is smaller than most boards. Notice it only has 2 PCI slots.
The image could still be fake, but from all the other info about this computer is that it used standard intl parts at the moment and that picture certianaly looks like parts that I can match.

They're definitely towering.
Apple managed to find a form factor that won't:
- fit under anything
- fit sideways into anything
All the while not being big enough for more internal drives. Thus, I challenge Apple to release Intel boxen that are:
- A really, really big tower with room for anything. One that complements the 42" Cinema Display.
- A really, really compact tower with room for one PCI-Express slot.

I assume it just looks that way because it hasn't had its Queer Eye makeover yet. Assuming, of course, it's real in the first place. Smaller and maybe slightly less expensive PowerMac machines that don't break your back alone make the Intel move seem perfectly tolerable.

In order to get a Dev Box, you need to be an ADC Select or Premier member. All that means is you have to agree to Apple's developer NDA and pony up another $499 for a year's membership.

Hey if they're requiring a premier or select membership... what happens to the MANY open source products that are great for the Mac? Thinking of Cyberduck, Adium, Handbrake, Moz, etc? Oh well... I imagine most of those will require a simple recompile anyway... hopefully...
Also, with that much spare room... I think this one could officially beat the MDD as the most expandable Mac ever hahaha...

Software is slightly different. Here you have a physical box, and when Apple asks for it back from you on December 31, 2006 and you don't provide it... Well, good luck to you.

How is it different? It is leaking confidential material. Furthermore, the people who leaked Tiger were not making any many. If somebody "leaks" one of these machines, they've got some cash in it for them.
However, I'm sure Apple Legal would get in the middle of any sale.

Anyone who leaks one of these into the marketplace is even more insane.
Apple can't tell if you leak Tiger. They will know if you sold a computer you were supposed to return to them by next year.

Developers were renting copies of Tiger that they then sold? These rented Mactels that are supposed to be returned to Apple by developers are going to go on eBay instead? I don't understand your post.
