The perpendicular recording technique, in which the magnetic domains are angled at 90 degrees to the disk surface rather than across it, is being pursued by a number of hard drive makers. The advantage is much greater data storage densities. Seagate said it will implement the technology in a 2.5in notebook drive running at 5400rpm but offering a capacity of 160GB, well beyond today's highest-capacity laptop-oriented units. In 2006, Seagate will ship a 7200rpm model, the 7200.1.

Damn, now only if they'd bring back the Pismo design along with the ability to add two batteries, each with 6 hours of life.

Intel claims that their dual core yonah chip (read: powerbook 2006) will do 8 hrs on a single battery. (claims) they said they are working with HW guys to make sure they use all the right components to get there.

I'm starting to become more interested in new iBooks.

Just FYI, Apple stock has been stable all week so that's a good thing.

Interesting; I'd have thought Toshiba would have done this first.

As for the Pismo design, I always liked the removable drive bays myself. One wonders if this could be done in a practical manner with the current (or later) cases.

Two 8 hour batteries would hold me over on a trans-Pacific flight. I hate running out of power a 1/4 of the way across the ocean.

The 15s and 17s should stay hot swappable, right?

Why!? I thought that was one of the most creative and fun things a technology company has done in a long time -- it really makes the technology understandable to the general public.

I don't know - watching it just made me think of the 1970's "Schoolhouse Rock" cartoons - just a bizarre flashback I guess
