I install it, then read the manual, usually. If I have trouble installing it, I will read it, too. So many people don't read manuals!

generally speaking, i will take a brief look at the "before you install" or install instructions just to be sure there is nothing special i need to be aware of....then the manual is filed away until such a time that i require it.

I only read them when dealing with stuff on Windows...because it's 100% ass backwards half the time; however, I never do for anything else...

Depends on if I have experience with it... digital stuff I take it out if after five minutes or more of fiddling I can't figure it out and don't have any ideas. Building stuff I keep it right beside me and don't let it go.

I never do for software, but I usually do for electronics. For example: I just bought a Sony Walkman and was able to find out how to disable this annoying beep using the manual. Turns out you have to hold down the menu button when the thing is off, rather than when it is on (which means it's playing too). That makes no sense to me, and I would have never figured it out on my own.

Usually not.
