Here

That's the day the Ottawa-born rocker's latest album is being released, but HMV won't be selling it, or anything else from her back catalogue.

The move, HMV says, is a protest against a deal struck between coffee giant Starbucks and Morissette's label, Maverick Records. Under the terms of their agreement, Morissette's latest effort -- an acoustic re-release of her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill -- will be sold exclusively at Starbucks.
What do you think? Is HMV's reaction too much?

Doubt it.

I think it's rather odd that STARBUCKS has exclusive rights to her CD.

Anyways, it sounds like Alanis Morissette's career may be entering the wrap up phase.

It seems odd on the face of it, but realistically, no one in America will have to walk more than 75 feet in any direction in order to buy it.

I'd rather see Starbucks have an exclusive "premier" deal than Wal-Mart. And for crying out loud, it's only for six weeks! Tower Records has had exclusive premiers, and nobody's gotten their drawers in a bunch over them. BestBuy has exclusive "added content" deals, and there has been no hue and cry over them. Is it because of the "Canadian content" of Alanis' work? Or maybe because HMV didn't get the deal they wanted? And is HMV boycotting all Maverick releases, or only Alanis'? Makes you wonder...

fight for what you believe in. they believe in the retail model and not the exclusive BS. AM fans come to HMV to buy her CD and maybe pick up a DVD too.

The retail model often deals with exclusives. You don't have to look too far beyond the shiny blue Apple in the upper left hand side of your screen to prove that. HMV better grow up and loose the "hey, that's not fair! Boohooo!" attitude.

I think HMV is having a big hissy fit, and in about 3 minutes no one will notice.

HMV is overpriced to start with. WAY overpriced. Either way I don't like Alannis so I could care less where the CD is sold. I got sick of her banshee like wailing / singing back when Jagged Little Pill first came out and the radio stations heavily overplayed her songs.

The places you named are places to that people to to ACTUALLY BUY MUSIC.

I think HMV is justifiable. If Alanis or Maverick don't want to deal with HMV, why should HMV have to deal with Alanis?
Who reads this???

The HMV flagship store here (downtown Toronto) is one of the cheaper retailers in town.

Really? I've NEVER seen it cheaper than other retailers here in Alberta. Hell Amazon was half the price of HMV on a lot of stuff. Even the evil Future Shop had better prices on some stuff.

That is quite possibly the most amazing thing I've read on MacNN ever. Apple going intel? Nothing in comparison.

Where exactly in West By God Virginia do you live? There are places in the US with internet access- or electricity for that matter, that don't have Starbucks?

Where I live, I can think of 6 within a few miles- and I bet I'm missing at least one.

i do not agree with these exclusive deals and although i do not shop at hmv i agree with their position. and also, from the record companies standpoint it seems odd too - with all the complaining about downloading killing their business you would think that they would want the new cd in as many stores as possible where it is visible to all and the consumer can benefit from competitive pricing.

I can remember my family going to our cabin in
Shannondale (near Harpers Ferry, WV) in the early
60's and Reston, VA was a wide spot in the road -
and actually not very wide.

Charles Town WVa got their first fast food (corporate)
when I was in Jr High - and if memory serves it was
Kentucky Fried Chicken there by the race track.

I live in the Ohio valley. No Starbucks here.

They probably wouldn't do too well. Starbucks takes advantage of yuppies with too much money.

There is one in Charleston.

http://www.starbucks.com/retail/loca...storeKey=93555

Actually 2

http://www.starbucks.com/retail/loca...storeKey=92320

But that is a good 100 miles south of me.

There are 11 Starbucks in WV over all.

None in the MOV.

I remember when Alanis was 19, angry, and teh hotness. We went and saw her in Dallas and we were so close that her sweat would fly on us when she'd swing her hair around. She also threw fruit and candy bars tot he crowd. There was also a disproportionate number of young hot girls there, too, so Dave and i got to be in the middle of all of them, "protecting" them from the crowd when it would lunge to the stage. It was quite the hormonal evening, I can assure you.

And now Alanis = teh crap.

Oh well.

Yes, JLP is a pretty good album. Every song seems to have a catchy tune. That being said, I don't think I'd purchase the re-release. Well, I don't have any business going to Starbucks. That place is a royal rip-off. Alanis Morisette is an okay artist, though. Much like Dave Matthews, her best asset is her voice.

She went off and changed the lyrics in "Ironic", too. It used to say "...meeting the man of my dreams, then meeting his beautiful wife." She changed it to say "...meeting the man of my dreams, and meeting his beautiful husband."

Spare me.

RAIL maybe she just fell for some guy that was gay, and decided to make the song relevant to her present life.

Who knows.

Now, if she changed it just to be political and "edgy" then yeah, lame.

No, she did it because she has a lot of gay friends and likes to support them -- or so she said during a 20/20 interview. Also, she's engaged to get married.

So yeah, lame. But she can do whatever she wants to, of course.

He hasn't been away from his keyboard long enough to go outside since Starbuck's incorporated. I can think of three within a mile of my house, but I live near a university, so they may be a little dense around here.

HMV has a huge non-top 40 selection. For instance, last time I checked, the local HMV had an entire floor dedicated to jazz and classical.

And HMV's online store has been teamed with Amazon for as long as I can remember. At least 3 years anyway. (I don't remember visiting HMV.ca before that.)

It was HMV.com, they ran their own online store for a good many years. The Amazon.ca partnership only happened in 2003.

HMV.com was crap: everything in a single frameset so it always showed "HMV.com" in the address bar (no linking to specific products) , their entire navigation menu and database lookup was done with JavaScript, and they had tonnes of redundant entried in the database, half of which had no information whatsoever, not even a price. Big piece of crap, no wonder they finally killed it.

And HMV can screw themselves, they get plenty of exclusive items.
The Lord said 'Peter, I can see your house from here.'
