It's still a 32-bit chip. Just allows for 64-bit memory addressing.

This news is older than dirt. The P4 went 64 bit sometime around the beginning of the year.

If I were a Mac user, I'd be ignoring the P4. It's pretty widely known Apple's not going to use it.

I am glad you decided not to make this one larger.

It would be too much coolness if it was bigger.

I could not stand it. (hint-hint)

It's still VERY WEIRD to see news like this and think it has anything to do with Macs.

Different news. Before you could buy (for more money, of course) a Pentium 4 with EM64T. Now all their Pentium 4s have EM64T and they cost the same. They've completely replaced the older P4 with the 64-bit enabled ones.

Loverly. But I agree it is weird to see news about Intel and feel good about it. And not feel so great about Itanic's brutal failure...

It's strange, but I actually don't mind the Intel thing. While the PPC may have been "technologically superior" you can't deny that Intel has some very interesting technologies coming out as well. They also seem to bump their chips with a much higher frequency.

I think the future is looking good.

I think what he is saying is the apple is not going to use the p4 that you can buy today. They are going to use the new pentium D - dual core chips shipping soon? to next spring.

I had some very interesting discussions in the compatibility lab at WWDC. I would guess that Apple is going for the newer Pentium M desktop derivatives. I think the Pentium D is still P4 derived.

Are these new 64 bit Pentium 4's Socket 915? I bought a P4 non 64 bit in December.

Its a little confusing:

Here's a link just posted today. I'll study this some more.

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets...oc.aspx?i=2445

ok. looked it over. long stort short. for the first time that i can remember in all the years i have owned a mac.... apple may have TOO MANY choices!

Seriously, the P4 looks to contniue as the single core solution. the Pentium D for dual core.

this is sort of interesting

As our tests revealed, 1066FSB did virtually nothing to improve performance on the 3.46EE over 800FSB. The conservative FSB speeds on Presler and Cedar Mill indicate to us that Intel probably did nothing to shorten Prescott's pipeline, although there may be other reasons why they have decided to keep the bus speed low as well.

Pentium 4 now only refers to the single core Prescott and upcoming 65nm Cedar Mill cores. Pentium D will refer to Smithfield and 65nm Presler.
All 5x1 processors are now 64-bit enabled.
