Hey all, I'm new here and have a question. My ipod was stolen, along with my powerbook. ouch.
Does anyone know any good theft prevention techniques for "gadgets" like digi cams, ipods, computers, etc? I'd like to know about prevention as well as recovery once they're stolen. I need to try to get my stuff back now, and once i get them back (haha) or buy new ones (likely) I'd like to know what I should do. Any help is appreciated.
Are there any other good threads with creative ways to get things back? I'm interested in anything and everything! (weeping)
Thanks!
michael

I don't think you can "prevent" such things. Make sure that you always know where they are and try to keep an eye on them, that's about all you can do.
Getting them back...well, I don't think so

All theft prevention measures do is keep honest people honest.
If a person wants your stuff they will get it.

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss terrorific. Sadly for the serious thief there isn't too much that can be done. Keeping your property in your sight at all times is the only real protection.

I've read about MacPhoneHome. It's an app that is hidden on your Mac and reports to a server everytime the machine comes online. If stolen and online you could trace the location of the machine, so they say. Of course, assuming they haven't formatted the HD, and that they'll be going online, this could help after theft.
Otherwise you can use things like Kensington Security to attacht the machine to a desk or likewise. I don't think something like that exists for iPod.
Sucks to hear your stuff got stolen. I hate thieves. No respect. Don't know if there is hope of you getting it back, but lets hope so.

I've got lapcop installed. Every time your network connection changes it sends a mail to a predetermined address. The good thing about lapcop is that it doesn't need a mail server to do this. The software sends a signal to a central server which in return takes care of the mailing.
This even works if the thief doesn't know the machine is online. As soon as the Mac sees, for example, a wireless connection it will try and contact the central server.
