Do record companies push stations to put older bands in heavy rotation?

Lately, the TWO classic rock stations I listen to have been playing a lot of Pretenders. Not that I mind because I like them, but I see this trend where every once in a while the classic rock stations will play a little more than they usually do of a particular band, regardless of whether or not they're touring. So far as I know, the Pretenders aren't. They were both doing this with Led Zep a month or so ago, and Floyd before that, and Thorogood before that. Is this some way record companies get listeners to buy some of the back catalog?

There is something called "gold rotation", and it's usually in conjunction with an upcoming new release or greatest hits record or something.

back catalogues are not promoted, this is because of the NEW HOTNESS effect
i.e.:
you spend your money and effort on the new CDs because thats your biggest return of investment. so unless something is going on with a older catalogue items like a reunion tour or something. and even then the radio station may be riding it's coat tails to please listeners.

The rock station up here pretty much plays nothing but Blue Oyster Cult and Rush with a new artists mixed in between. I have nothing but disdain for Rush, so I just stick with NPR. :-)
Mainstream radio sucks.

Actually, that's an incorrect assessment.
Back catalogues *are* promoted, because they are instant money with no investment.
That's the whole point of releasing the fifteenth "Greatest Hits" compilation, with two previously unreleased tracks on it. The only real costs incurred by that compilation are for design, manufacturing and packaging, so they start making money off the first copy sold.
The NEW HOTNESSS is a lot harder to make money off, since you first have to recoup the advances on production, recording, engineering, and artists in addition to manufacturing etc.

You suck!
BYO is given no credit and Rush is shat upon for no reason. Peart's an incredible drummer and Lee's an equally awesome bassist. Not like those stations would play Hemispheres in its entirety. Whatever it is, it's a hell of alot better than listening to Hillary Duff.
Radio stations don't play enough Zeppelin or Floyd. I do think they should try to play something besides "Another Brick In The Wall Pt. II" [pointless without "The Happiest Days Of Our Lives"] and "Black Dog."

I'm still waiting for the day when I hear Time roll into The Great Gig in the Sky on the radio. It NEVER HAPPENS.

My dream…listen to Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts I-IX.
Or Close to the Edge or Karn Evil 9.
They'd never play that. Too long.
Before they ruined Stairway to Heaven, I couldn't imagine them playing all 8 minutes.
