It seems to be a private matter. Hope that it can be resolved amicably.

The more money people have, the cheaper assholes they become. When I worked at a car park, the regular average Janes and Joes would pay the $3 without much of a thought, but all the egomaniac Yuppies with their BMWs would argue over and over that they should only pay $1.50 because they "forgot" to get it validated at the nightclub.

I agree about conservative-types sometimes being cheap b@st@rd$.
Around here, where I live, the grocery store baggers (the people that bag the groceries and walk you to your car and put them in the trunk) are tipped. There is a huge sign, however, on the wall that says, "Please, no tipping. It is our privilege to carry your groceries to your car." However, everyone knows that the sign is there so that the cheapo types don't get guilt complexes. I've spoken to a few baggers and they told me that the people with the nicest cars and the most jewelry and designer handbags and clothes are the ones that don't tip.
I tip them $5 every single time because they are hot and the sun beats down on them over and over while they walk the groceries out to the car.
However, I never have a shortage of people who want to bag my groceries and bring them to my car.

So do you give them a $5 or five $1? Did you want to reword that?

No. I give them a $5 bill.
No. Why would I tip women any differently than the guys?
I tip them because I have respect for the fact that they're doing that job. Some of them are physically challenged and they're out there packing groceries and putting them in people's cars. Others are high schoolers saving for college. Others are retirees that aren't making it on their measly social security.
Whoever they are, they're working and not at home mooching from parents or others, not doing something illegal, not feeling sorry for themselves, and not standing on a street corner with a sign begging for money.

She should be fired.
Forwarding emails outside the firm with the intent to bring attention to the matter and bringing negative publicity to the firm is enough to justify her dismissal. If she took issue with the request of the senior partner she should have filed a complaint with HR or someone higher up. Choosing to violate the firm’s policy, and I am sure it was, by sending internal correspondences to 3rd party outside individuals was the wrong way to handle the situation.
If he was making an inappropriate request or was being petty then it should have been handled within the firm. Regardless of how others may take his request for payment his initial correspondence was cordial enough that it should have been responded to with some professionalism.
She should be out on her ass.

Well, it's not Obvious that she sent the emails outside of the firm. Someone else (heck maybe even her boss) forwarded the email outside of the firm, but that could have been anyone if the email was being passed around inside the firm initially.

give me a break, she prob sent it to a friend and that friend leaked it. Should she be fired no, being fired for something like that is just as petty as the orginal email. Some people that are so bent on Rules are rules are rules are so pathetic. Live life, enjoy life and just be a good person, rules are not stone they are ment to be bent.
I like the part about the fund raiser for the 4 Pounds lol I thought that was the best part.

Do any of idiots you have real jobs? You cannot forward internal office correspondences to friends and then not be held liable for the contents getting out. In a corporate environment this is true and you better goddamn believe in a law firm that your contract holds you to keeping internal emails internal.
Its not a rule made for shits and giggles. Not only does the potential exist for sensitive material to get into the wrong hands but in cases like this the damage done to the reputation of the firm is not easily repaired.

A senior partner who holds vested interest in the reputation and standing of the firm is not going to forward emails like this around. If they do its to document her insubordination so he can fire her ass and then it sent to HR who does nothing but obsess about following office policy.
So even if she forwarded it initially to a friend in the office the responsibility of it getting out falls on her. And since you are on such a kick about not jumping to conclusions who the hell says she should not pay for the cleaning bill. If the accident occurred due to her negligence and incompetence then why shouldn’t she cover the cost? Because she makes less money? Pff, that’s an idiotic reason to absolve her from responsibility.
The real best part of this is that the partner has far more job security than a typist and the minute this news falls out of the public eye she can start counting down the days until she get her walking papers.

That sounds like a fairly idiotic statement.

I don't think any of us disagree with you. The question is still who sent the email outside. Was it the secretary, or someone else?

I'm not going to jump on whether the request for money was being cheap or petty - the whole issues is petty. You do need to be sure you have a pretty good relationship with your boss before you start sending off emails like that. Now that it's spread, my guess is she'll be fired, not necessarily for the email getting out (that may be someone else's neck) but for writing the original email.

Agreed.

Office? Company outing? Deposition? Restaurant?
You don't often eat in the proximity of people you don't either know, like, hate or work closely with. I mean with every Ketchup wanting to be like Hinz, how easy is it to spill the stuff on somebody unless they are really nearby.
Not very easy unless you are epileptic, you did it intentionally or it was an accident and you were very close to each other.
Why would they be sitting that close?
Would anyone with an attorneys income REALLY demand payment from an associate who makes only a FRACTION of his salary unless there was SOMETHING else going on that we don't see in the news story?
Use your noodles, people.
I won't try to judge this without sufficient evidence. But, of course, if the effort here is to come to the most obvious right (or politically correct) way of voting WITHOUT having enough information to make a sound decision, then I vote he is wrong to demand payment and is cheap.
If what we're trying to do is get to the heart of the matter, then we must wait.
You say, "but waiting is no fun."
(Then I say we should all argue everything NOW without waiting for any evidence beyond what seems obvious.)
The only reason we even TRY to come to conclusions about who and what is right or wrong without having enough information is because we unconsciously set up our own little scenarios, little movies or movie scripts where we are either the stars or the directors and writers and we apply our own little fantasy supporting conditions to the known facts and then we unconsciously believe our mental fantasy is the truth and we argue for our own version of what's right or wrong.
That is, until reality rears it's ugly head to threaten the fantasy.
But, never fear, fantasy is stronger than reality. A good myth, a good lie is as real to it's believer
as any truth and can outlive it, too!
So, in this case and in any case where you find yourself passionately lobbying for an outcome or a version of the truth that can't be determined with the limited facts at your disposal, you would do better to share your imaginary suppositions and argue THEM rather than the issue you think you can accurately judge.
At least by discussing your fantasies you'd actually have all the info needed to properly dissect and understand them.
That you WON'T make the effort to take a look at yourself before trying to determine what's right or wrong in other people's lives without having all the facts shouldn't bother any of us here. After all, we can always project the conclusion of those fantasies on the pages of MacNN where no one will notice how vapid the whole process is.
