So I need to move off .mac because its a rip-off. I would have done it last year but I didn't have the time to transfer all my email to a new account. I really have no idea what to get. This is way to hard.

This is going to probably be a movable type based site. Most of the updates will be pictures and stuff. I also be running gallery.

I wanted mackworth.com but that was taken. Do people look at nicknames, etc?

You know the fashionable and classy thing is to buy your name. I mean, where would I be without http://www.joshuazimmerman.com? Its easy to remember, and it'll never go out of fashion. Clearly, a wise investment. (Unlike that stupid son of a **** who owns joshzimmerman.com! One day I will have his domain for my own!)

http://www.chrislow.org (broken in Mac IE but I don't care)

Yeah, go with your name. But, I also register funny things I hear (like when a friend of mine described the members of his parish as "quixotically banal," I went and registered quixotically-banal.com and I use it as a client staging server now).

Yeah, I would but my full name is 17 letters long and my last name isn't very easy for people to spell. I guess I could go with something like mikem.com or something.

eh, seems to be broken in Safari 2.0 as well, or at least the links don't do anything. Pretty though!

Looks like someone is squatting on mikem.com, but my advice would be to go for something along those lines. Good luck!

Thanks! The entire thing is a css experiment from a couple months ago. No content any more, but I'm working on it.

damn, I was using Network Utility to check to see if names were taken. So I checked mikem.org and said "No results found ..." so I go to register it only to discover its taken by some guy in Germany.

just use whois in terminal. if a man was paranoid, he might believe that many of the registration sites record what you're searching for in a nefarious attempt to get the good ones and charge you outrageous prices when you eventually decide that's the right one for you. or that they sell the list it to domain harvesters.

whois is usually super fast anyhow. been using it a lot lately.

if your domain isn't taken, you'll see something like this:
Code:
whois rubberduckyindahizous.com Whois Server Version 1.3 Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net for detailed information. No match for "RUBBERDUCKYINDAHIZOUS.COM".

Hey, the terminal query is nice and quick ... just be sure the read the disclosure at the bottom of the terminal window when you run it:
NOTE: THE WHOIS DATABASE IS A CONTACT DATABASE ONLY. LACK OF A DOMAIN
RECORD DOES NOT SIGNIFY DOMAIN AVAILABILITY.

I sent the guy from mikem.org an email inquiring about it. He isn't using it. I guess I will see what he says and go from there. I could do mike-m.org or something too, maybe.

Awesome, that domain has huge potential.
