I got my wisdom teeth taken out yesterday (all 4). Yesterday was fine, I was just tired and slept a lot, and when I wasn't sleeping there wasn't really too much pain (probably because I'm on 2 pills of oxycodon and 800 mg of advil). This morning when I woke up, I was in so much pain. The right side of my mouth has swollen up huge and I took all the pills (oxycodon for pain, advil for swelling, and pennicillin for infection.) However, my face is still killing me. On the sheet the doctor gave me it said no smoking for 24 hours (which it has now been) so I'm thinking about getting my good old friend mary jane to help me out here.

Does anyone have any advice? How did you get by when you got yours taken out.

That sucks. When mine are pushing my whole face hurts like that too. They seem to be coming in straight so I don't think I want them pulled!

I'd go back to the dentist. If you are feeling pain when you are still on Percocet that doesn't sound right. I had my wisdom teeth chiseled out by a military dentist in two operations -- first one side, then the other. The first side was very painful. The second side was much less so and I remarked as much to my dentist. He told me I probably had a dry socket and should have come back so he could numb it out. Of course, not having had my wisdom teeth out before, I had no idea it wasn't supposed to be that painful.

I had impacted wisdom teeth, top and bottom. They came in underneath the roots of my last molars on each side, top and bottom, and started coming through sideways.

I had to have them surgically cut out.

Then I developed dry sockets three days later. Talk about pain. I got septicemia from the infection in my jaw and then I got boils on my body everywhere. I was so sick. I had to go into the hospital overnight for IV antibiotics and then go back in the mornings for three days for more IV antibiotics. My head felt huge and like a log and hurt and I had bad fevers. I was in a daze. A friend came to stay with me (God bless you, Seth) and took care of me and got me through it because I was at college and alone. I ended up having to have my dry sockets packed (Oh Joy). All of this was in preparation for a second set of braces (orthodontics) because I had my teeth straightened in high school, but then my teeth all shifted (in part because of the wisdom teeth coming in crooked) in my late teens so I had to have braces put back on my teeth a second time. Now I'm glad that I did it because I haven't had a cavity in 20 years because my teeth have good spaces between them which makes brushing and flossing easy and effective. But, back then I was miserable so I feel for you.

I think you need to call your dentist and if your dentist has a lackadaisical attitude then call your medical doctor and/or go see a medical doctor. You might need to be referred to an oral surgeon.

Good luck.

That's exactly how mine were. The x-rays I got of them were almost funny looking, all my teeth in perfect alignment and then 4 completely sideways inside my gums.

Actual, an oral surgeon did do this job because it was too compilcated for the dentist. He is a great man, he called about 5 hours after I went home yesterday to check up on me and make sure everything was alright. The pain pills are starting to kick in a lot more now so I'm feeling a little better, but it still hurts like hell. I have frozen peas on them as I did yesterday, not so much to reduce the swelling (becuase it's too late for that) but it seems to sooth the pain a little.

I'm a little nervous to smoke anything while this is going on though. Does anyone have any expeerience with that? The doctor's sheet said 8-10 hours (24 hours preferred). It has been over 24 hours and I know if I smoked, a lot of the pain would go away. But I also read somewhere that it could cause excessive bleeding and I do not want that to happen.

Do NOT smoke. I repeat, do NOT smoke. There are many reasons for this, but first and foremost is that you WILL get dry sockets and that is very bad. I have never smoked, but I dated an oral surgeon a few years ago and he would tell me horror stories about smokers and their teeth and complications after oral surgery because they refused to stop smoking for a few days.

Seriously, use the time to not smoke and while you're at it, stop smoking for good. Your teeth will be whiter, your lungs will be pinker, and your heart will love you for it.

Well before I read your post, I took two small bowlpacks. I came back and read it...wish I had saw it sooner, I didn't know that about the dry sockets. But if I don't do anymore, 2 packs isn't enough for that to happen is it?

And by the way, I don't smoke ciggarettes at all anymore, and only weed once in a while. So my teeh and lungs are fine. Thanks though cody! I appreciate it. Quitting ciggarettes was one of the hardest things I've had to do.

Don't smoke anything anymore.

Did he tell you to rinse your mouth out with a listerine/water combination? VERY GENTLY you're supposed to rinse your palate out with warm water/listerine. Don't swish it into the corners of your mouth, just rinse the inside of your mouth out and spit it out. It kills billions of germs each time and helps prevent infection.

Good luck!

I had three wisdom teeth removed (the fourth seems to have never developed for some reason).

Jell-O GOOD. Pudding GOOD. Yogurt BAD.

One of my wisdom teeth came loose over a 2-3 year period. One day I was using the water-pik and it knocked it out. Never an ounce of pain or blood, even though it must have been the dry socket of the century.

Had an impacted one taken out 10 days ago. ICE. Seriously, ice your face (both sides) CONSTANTLY. This will really help with the swelling. As others suggested, if you are in a lot of pain, go back to the dentist and make sure everything is OK. You may have developed dry socket. Also, as Cody suggested, rinse GENTLY with Listerine. Good luck!

At least as far as yogurt with fruit goes, it's too acidic. It's not directly harmful, per se, but it really stings. At least, that was my experience.

Yeah, ice is good. That's all I did my first day to help the swelling. Even though it won't help the swelling anymore, I'm still doing it because it feels good on my face. The right side of my face is still huge but feeling much better. Millenium is right about the fruit yougurt, stuff like that stings for the first day or so. I am now able to eat acidic food and cold drinks and stuff, but not able to eat anything hard yet. I can't open my mouth that wide as of now.
And I figured out a way around the smoking issue. Brownies anyone?

My brother didn't react well to his pain killers (he said he got into a mood when he literally didn't care at all anymore). Mary Jane worked well for him.

PS I had to go to the dentist last Wednesday because of my wisdom teeth right before a conference. They start to come out (fortunately there are only two of them) … :/

Oh two of them! Lucky!
Yeah that's why I'm not using my painkillers anymore. At first they worked well, but then I got all itchy and stuff. Not to mention oxycotton is addicting as hell.

Oxycodone is not addictive if you only use it while you are experiencing this kind of pain. I had darvocet prescribed for me after my four-way extraction, and I actually slept through a hurricane the next day (Frederick, which nailed southern Mississippi in 1979).

Simey is right-GO BACK TO THE DENTIST. Until you can see him, try crushed ice to reduce the swelling and the pain. DO NOT SMOKE ANYTHING! The 24 hour smoking ban is for normal recoveries-yours IS NOT A NORMAL RECOVERY. The smoke-whatever kind-can irritate already irritated and inflamed tissue and cause even more problems than what you're experiencing already.

InvisibleX, most people have a moderate amount of discomfort with a wisdom tooth extraction. I was a woos and insisted on sedation for the procedure, but the next day the meds kept me softly happy through a pretty large natural disaster, and in the following days, I did fine with the cleanup effort, so I can say that my experience was for a very short term discomfort. YMMV, but think positive! Almost everyone does fine, and since you already know about somebody with a problem, that probably puts your odds for having a good outcome as very high! (Sorry, Nodnarb!)

Yeah, I got a dry socket. The dentist can put in some nice medicated stuff down into your socket. It hurt like hell, but in a good way. Anyways, good luck to you man.
