Why is adult suddenly synonymous with sex/porn?

I was chatting about this with a female friend the other day and I mentioned, you know it's stupid that Adult has become synonymous with porn/sex/nudity whatever. Especially when dependancy on things like porn and sexual addictions are actually often signs of personal under-development. IE person hasn't developed as well as they should have into a mature adult.

I think it's just short for "Adult-only". As in "no kids allowed".
I agree with your sentiments on the subject.

Makes me wonder what the word "adultery" meant before that change took place

"Adultery" comes from the same Latin root as "adulterate," which means "corrupt," whereas "adult" comes from the past form of a word meaning "grow up."

Adult comes from the latin "to grow up" and biologically means "fully developed" and "mature" in reference to sexual development of an organism. An adult is an animal that has reached the age of procreation, and thus, it doesn't seem strange at all that a word that is defined by sexuality has come to indicate "things for those who are sexually mature."
Today's common use of "Adult" to indicate some threshold set by society (e.g. 18 to vote or 21 to drink) is devoid of reference to sexuality, so perhaps a better question is: when did "Adult" come to mean "legal age" and not "sexually mature?"

(Note: The use of 'adult' to mean 'pornographic' apparently dates back to 1958, according to etymonline.com)

It meant the same as it does now. The word 'adultery' has nothing to do with the 'adult', etymologically speaking. Adultery comes from Latin 'adulterare', from 'ad' (to) + 'alterare' (change, alter). 'Adulterare' means 'to corrupt, debauch'.
'Adult', on the other hand, comes from 'adultus', the past participle of 'adolescere', which is 'ad' (to) + 'alescere' (be nourished, increase, grow up) [inchoative of 'alere' (to nourish)].
So while 'adult' means 'someone who is/has grown up', 'adultery' means 'the act of corrupting/debauching [sb/sth]'.
I know this is pretty much the opposite of what you were looking for, but what the hell? A language geek's gotta do what a language geek's gotta do...
Edit: Damn, I'm way too slow this time of night!

Milfs (or is that 'milves' in plural?) do not fall under the category of 'mature'. 'Mature' would be gilfs instead (Grannies I'd Like... yeah, you know the rest). Though personally, I prefer the term GIWLWF (Grannies I Wouldn't Like to Watch F*ck): doesn't roll off the tongue quite so easily, but it's so much more accurate in its description of the focus group in question.

Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery?
What is that country where movies with guns and violence are rated R and movies with frontal nudity are PG?

Makes sense to me; I see nothing wrong with nudity (and think kids should be exposed to it in a healthy way), but excessive violence is something that should probably be restrained around the 6-year-olds.

R is 13, right?
And PG is okay for all, right? (These American titles are so confusing; why not just use age limits like normal people?)
Some violent movies receive 'our R rating' (11 or 15, depending on the level of violence). Frontal nudity in itself warrants no particular rating, I think (maybe it warrants a 7, but I'm not sure; movies with ratings of 7 are usually not the kind of movies that contain full frontal nudity); it's the sex factor that gets rated.
As an example, there was some 'family movie' about some guy who was on the local youth soccer team (that wasn't the point of the story, but he was), and there was one or two shower/locker room scenes with lots of full frontal nudity (lots of guys being shown full frontal, not lots of nudity), and I don't think that one got any rating, it was just okay for all. Had they been having sex in the locker room, instead of just getting dressed, it would probably have gotten either an 11 or 15, depending on how graphic it was. I think 18 is reserved for extremely violent/gory movies and hard pornography, but it might include soft pornography as well, I'm not sure.

In your little Internet world it might be true.
Outside, however, adult means 18 + (and sometimes 21 +).

Wow... I didn't even realize I got my own world...
And I didn't realize my Internet world extended so far away from my house as to like... oh shoot... what's that street... it's right by St. V mall... anyway.. but wow all those people live in my world... should I be taxing em?
By that I mean, this was brought up after we sighed when we noticed how big an "Adult Video" store was. And I made the point that if anything it should be Juvenile or Under Developed video store...

Wonderful film, btw.

Indeed. A masterpiece IMO.
Though it helped watching it in Swedish. The dubbed version don't get the same feeling out of it.

It's really not that confusing.
G = General Audiences (All Ages Admitted)
PG = Parental Guidance Suggested (Some Materials May Not Be Suitable for Children)
PG-13 = Parent Strongly Cautioned (Some materials may be inappropriate for children under 13)
R = Restricted (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian)
NC-17 = (No one 17 and under admitted)
They are guidelines...

I'm guessing that's is because PG-13 didn't come out until 1984.

In the US perhaps. But anyway, it's still rated the same way as before in this part of the world.

no.
The rest of the world does not run on your system.
The equivalent to PG-13 is FSK 12 here in Germany, and that's usually for mild violence or fairly explicitly sexual content.
Yes, Europe differentiates between nudity and sexual content - alien concept, I know, in a country where nudity in the arts only exists in explicitly sexual context, and where bedsheets are apparently superglued just below the collarbones prior to going to bed...
The film is rated age 7 in Scandinavia and age 6 in Germany, and, as I mentioned, it is one example of THOUSANDS.
(I'd venture that it's rated age 7 because there's some fairly heavy content where Ronja figures out that her father being a robber means that he's a bad-ass gangster, so she runs away from home.)

Part of it is the marketing. Which results in lots of irony.
Another example:
Do you really expect you'd see any gentlemen at a "Gentleman's" club? :/

Analogika, perfect example; I knew there'd be some great examples of children's movies with nudity.

Aha, thank you. Knowing what the letters stand for makes it a lot easier to figure out/remember. What's 'NC' short for, though (apart from North Carolina)? And what exactly are the definitions of the X ratings?

But still back to my original point... it' stupid that Adult is used in these contexts. It makes it seem as if you're only adult if you enjoy this sort of thing, go out of your way for it etc... grrr

No, it just makes it seem like you have to be an adult to be allowed to enjoy it.
You don't have to take night classes ('adult education') to be an adult, either.
