"Vigorous" isn't a very good translation of 元気. In most cases, "high spirits" would be closer to what's meant. In the few cases I've seen where I was sure people would have said "vigorous" in English (basically, cooking instructions), 元気 was not the word they used. (I never learned 元気 in my Chinese class. Is it more like "vigorous" in Chinese?)

Yup:
“元气 (氣) yuánqì n. vitality, vigor”
I got the 'vigorous' thing (as an adjective) from Dashboard's Japanese-English translator, so I just figured it meant more or less the same in Japanese and Chinese (as is so often the case).
So, it's kinda just used like 'happy' or 'glad' would be in an English context, then?

Think of another word for 'in front of', a more formal word. “He stood _______ me”.
Then replace the first letter of 'rock' with the sound that the Japanese have a hard time distinguishing from an r.

I know, I figured it out. But at first glance I read it as 'in front of the rock' and it didn't make much sense.

Ok what the hell. There should not be any hiragana characters that can't be displayed. I'd understand if it was kanji, but for some reason the hiragana for sa and so don't seem to be displaying. Stupid unicode.

Don't think its a problem with unicode. A couple characters in my previous post were not displayed, like there was a hole in the sentence. Added a couple spaces in the area where the characters were not displaying and *poof* out they came, just fine.

Why do I have question marks on my screen? Is this what nonhuman is talking about? See below:
This is a Tiger iMac G5 running Safari 2.0 by the way.
Oh and my Translation widget seems to be borked. And how do I enter hiragana/katakana and Chinese characters?

Yep, that's exactly what I'm talking about. For some reason some characters aren't rendering properly on web pages (happens in Firefox too) even though they'll display just fine when entered into the text boxes (and they even show up right if I edit my post).
To enter hiragana/katakana you need to turn on the Japanese input mode, then just type out the romanji (lowercase will give you hiragana, capital will give you katakana). Type out a word in hiragana and hit space to have it convert to kanji.
Same for Chinese only you just type pinyin and have it go straight to hanzi.

Out of curiosity, what browser exactly are you using? Firefox? Safari 2.0? Custom Safari?
