Don't need no pilots I would reckon.
_,.
a solitary firefly flies at nite
into the darkness an endless flight
a million flashes of delight.

I see a pilot in the picture. (What is the scale on that thing?) I can't tell, but it looks big enough to have a pilot in it...

This is Boeing's Bird of Prey, which was unveiled to the public in October 2002. It first flew in 1996, so it's not that new, really.

Its future: being made into a really shitty movie.

Look closely: The intake is behind the bubble canopy of the cockpit.

I disagree; I think "Stealth" will be a great "summer release" movie. Surely not art, not at all! But fun nevertheless.

Stealth will probably be a fun movie. I mean fast jets, hot male and female leads, and a killer HAL like airplane on the rampage? What isn't to like? Its got all the sex appeal of Top Gun with the killer AI of 2001!

Stealth completely lost me when the preview showed the Evil Computer Plane create a ring of fire around a guy. Like, do the writers not understand that airplanes can fly in three dimensions?

It's like that incredibly stupid "ring" explosion visual we've been getting in just about every movie where something huge blows up in space since making of 2010. The wave rushes towards the heros in their ships.

in two dimensions.

Then it shakes them through, and I cringe every time I see that.

ahh color me embarassed. i didnt pay much attention as the profile reminded me of the typical x plane... why the hell is there a pilot in the cockpit? are they planning a manned xplane? or is it just a test mule for a pilot to get a feel of the aerodynamics/handling capability of the xplane (design study)

That's usually where pilots ride, but not always...

I find it interesting that we continue to push the stealth aircraft envelope... when most countries can't knock down our 1960's technologies and we are moving ever closer to space based defense/offense platform.

I guess it is to maintain air superiority...

Not only to maintain superiority but to be able to do so with fewer aircraft and aircrews. Ideally, with the theoretically best platform and weapons, a single squadron of 12 or so aircraft would be able to dominate airspace over ANY potential adversary.

Realistically, it's more like a few wings of 36-48 aircraft each of a variety of types that would be needed, particularly today with the USAF's mix of aging and aged aircraft. There are now THIRD generation B-52 aircrew members! People whos GRANDFATHERS flew B-52s are flying them now! They can't last forever, so newer airframes and newer designs are imperative.
