The woman watched her son and husband getting hit by passing cars.
She grabbed her portable time travelling device and tried to save them but failed miserably because her device was powered by the same batteries as the 3rd generation iPods and lost its power during her travel...she returned dead but one day older...

The only weird thing is why he put the woman in the back seat. Seems to me the best way to do it would have been to put her in the front right (or left? is Japan a weirdo left-driving place?), and then crashed into that corner.
Of course, turns out it was moot anyway since
(a) the authorities would have figured out that she was already dead
(b) he was too much of an idiot not to get killed himself

maybe they were on a long car ride and she had died during the ride, they thought she was just asleep (the backseat being a more comfortable and less visually distracting seat)
