So yeah, I got a Dell laptop.
My school had a postgrad party, and at the end of it, there was a raffle. I missed out on all the cool prizes (TV's, iPods, etc.) but won a freaking Dell Inspiron. Woot? It was awesome though, everyone booed me as I picked it up.
Anyway, so this girl wanted to buy it from me for 75% of its retail price, and I've been trying to figure out what model it is at the Dell store, but I can't.
Here's what I know. It's 1.5 ghz, with the integrated Intel video card. It has 512mb RAM (actually 504?!), the HD space in Windows explorer says 52 gigabytes total (which is weird, cause Dell only offers 40/60 options... maybe this is what they call 60 gigs?). 15 inch screen with crappy res (1280*800 I think), not sure of the battery, no real software installed (no MS Office).
That's about all I know. Can anyone help me figure out what this is worth?

I still have my Inspiron 8600, which was a great laptop, except for Windows OS thing. I paid 1300 or so for it, so my guess for yours... I'd take about a grand for it.

Not really. Anyone know anything about this weird HD space information? Is this '52 gb' harddrive 60 gigs?

Yes.
EDIT: 60 billion bytes = 55.9 GB
Hmm... 52 GB = 55.8 billion bytes... weird.
EDIT AGAIN: Don't Dells have their name stamped somewhere on them? Look all over the case for stickers or numbers.

Don't shoot low when selling it to her. She wants a laptop, you're going to give her a brand new one cheap. Go for more of a 85% of retail price. I mean every extra dollar you get is an extra dollar to spend on an iPod, Powerbook, or single bills to stick in a stripper's g-string at that frat party you'll end up going to.

Yeah, tell her you can't figure out what model it is so you'll sell it for $1300 and call it even.

Dells don't have modal numbers. The reason why is that they use the same case over and over again for different lines. My Latitude Pentium 3 has the same case the brand new Pentium 4 Cheap Latitudes have. They probably don't label the modal number so they can use leftover cases in later lines.

It has 504 because the integrated video card uses up to 128 MB of system RAM depending on what the laptop is doing. You might find that the reported RAM is different each time you look at it. That's one of the benefits of even the cheapest Apple laptop, dedicated video memory. You don't have to worry about the video card syphoning off system RAM.

Dells have model numbers printed on them. My Inspiron 8200 had "Inspiron 8200" printed on the top of the cover and the back.

Guys, is this laptop worth keeping as a gaming machine? Or no? How well would it run Half Life 2 for isntance?
