On the Apple homepage is really cool to watch. Kind of puts the rate of buying into perspective.

Is that really realtime, or is it an approximation?

They are using Ajax..

It looks like they are grabing a new number every five minutes.
http://www.apple.com/itunes/external_counter.xml

And using Javascript to estimate.

It looks like it.
When I took the calculation it zeroed in at 4PM (Honolulu-PST) on Wednesday July 20.
But it probably won't be close to that hour. It's a better bet that it will be on that day than on that hour.

That sucks. I take some solace in the fact that someone won by buying "Don't Dream It's Over."

the current www.apple.com graphic makes me think of nothing so much as gorickey's retirement post.

I guess it's one of those "life imitating art" things... or something.

The alter ego of Quick Draw McGraw:

El Kabong is on the left. He defeats the bad guys by hitting them over the head with a guitar.

Wow, I was approx. 1 minute early. I didn't realize the counter on Apple's web site was delayed about 5 minutes.

I didn't know how long it would take for the purchase to go through so I made my first purchase early. That was the one that came the closest. The other 2 near the 500,000,000 mark were 5 minutes late.
