Is it just me or are the onions you buy these days just dont have as much zing to it anymore for some strange reason? They dont't make my eyes water when I cut them nor do they have that strong taste/smell. :

Your senses dull as you age. Maybe that's it.

Actually, I tend to agree. I don't like onions, but I'm eating more and more of them because I can stand the taste now.

There has been a lot of work done to moderate onions here in Texas, and in (U.S.) Georgia as well. The issue is getting the flavor without burning out the eater's taste buds. Sweet yellow onions are quite popular, but except in a few varieties such as the Vidalia onion from Georgia, the potentcy of onions varies considerably. Maybe you're getting onions that should be marked as "sweet" when you really want "strong" onions.

I LOVE onions, but I have to make sure I get the right ones for the purpose I intend for them. To me, a sweet onion is better sliced on a sandwich or sprinkled liberally on a salad, while a stronger onion is called for when it's going to be cooked.

I'm far from an expert. I've just learned how to make a sandwich that doesn't burn my mouth, and a stew that has plenty of flavor...

If you don't want sweet onions, this site can help you know which to avoid.

Personally, I only buy sweet varieties now.

They usually don't last long enough for photography. I might try to get a few pictures the next time I make one though.

I think Outback is overrated and overpriced, but I'll go there just to get a Bloomin' Onion.

Sweet videlias and Maui onions are my favorites for just about any kind of cooking. Eat them raw like apples.
