Without Virex, .Mac really isn't worth it for me, and I don't want to get hooked on a .Mac email. Are there any other popular email providers with IMAP servers? I may just have to stick with Gmail, but I really do love IMAP. I feel comfortable knowing that I see exactly what's on the server.

FastMail

One time, $14.95 fee for 16 megs of IMAP/SMTP/Web mail among other services. Additional fees; some one-time, others yearly; for additional storage/bandwidth/features.

register a vanity domain - you'll get IMAP for free.

domaininvestigator.com is a no-frills dns/mail provider that I use - you get squirrelmail too. (a webmail interface)

Cool. Didn't know that Fastmail offered IMAP as well.

It was a pacifier for Windows users who thought they needed it. It did NOTHING as there was nothing to protect your Mac from.

.mac offers way more than anti-virus, or offered it anyway.

- Calendar
- Bookmarks
- Address Book
- Upload movies and photos with iMovie or iPhoto directly into your space... slideshows...
- Web Page
- Tons of templates
- membership perks (software)
- membership for versiontracker
- online tutorials and multimedia

Did I miss anything?

oh, backup.

Odds are you didn't know how to use it or take advantage of what it has to offer.
Most Windows users don't understand something actually working well as .mac with your computer so they (if not told about it) don't bother investigating the options.

It's like buying a car with a built in hands-free phone and never bothering to activate it.

Another vote for Fastmail.fm. Fantastic web interface, rock-solid service, and cheap.
You can also buy a domain from someplace like namecheap.com, and set up 'aliases' in Fastmail so you can use you@yourdomain.com if you're into that.

Any idea if there is support for multi-byte characters (such as Japanese)?

Nothing, eh? It scans for Windows viruses, and frankly, I don't want to be passing them on. Furthermore, I get kicked off my school network if I don't have a virus scanner, and Norton is worse than Virex. Don't put words in others' mouths.

I knew all of those features existed, and was planning on utilizing some of them. Nevertheless, the main selling point was the combination of virus scanning, backup, and a clean interface. The lack of a virus scanner sort of ruins it for me. It's obviously fine for you, and that's great: But I'm not you.

Now, back to the topic, does anyone have any other suggestions? Fastmail.fm might be hard for people to remember, and 16MB is nothing to write home about.

Edit: Woops: They have many domains. Still, 16MB is a little iffy. Of course, I primarily use my school account, so perhaps that'd be fine. And it's a hell of a lot cheaper than .Mac. And I wouldn't feel like a chump .

Tell me how an infected Word / Excel or PowerPoint will affect my computer?

Not going to happen unless I'm running VPC.

Well, as you can see, the 16MB is for a one-time fee of $15; for $20/year you get 600...

I have an Enhanced account, and got regular one-time Member accounts for my family and my in-laws; I use the aliasing features of the Enhanced account to give them all firstname@lastname.net accounts. It works well for everybody.

Microsoft Office macro viruses can infect other Microsoft Office documents.

And if they infect your templates, you're in big trouble.

Did you miss the part about the free antivirus?

clamXav <<<< You quoted that part.. so I would guess yes.

Versiontracker.com

Don't enable macros. Another solution, because that's all there is.

Yeah, but $20/year is approaching expensive . I wish, for a $50 one-time fee, I could get 50MB or 100MB.

Anyway, how does that firstname@lastname.net work? I have a domain name: Could I use it in conjunction with fastmail? I read the stuff on the site, but I'm not sure forwarding is what I want.

OPTION: Extra mail storage
$24.95 one-time fee per 100MB
$14.95 (member account) + $24.95 (extra hundred megs of mail storage) = $39.90 one-time fee
